New Poll For New Console Choices (November 19, 2006)

Now that the last two major systems in the new console cycle have been released, it's time again to ask which you'd prefer for your next Wing Commander game. Lots of things have changed since we last ran the poll, and the system that the next WC game ended up being for wasn't even an option back then. The PC isn't a choice in order to keep the results interesting, but there is amazing potential for new games with each of the listed options. Let us know which one you'd like to see a game on the most.

Battlestar Galactica was the winner of our last poll. I would've expected Space: Above & Beyond to take the top spot, but BSG's current popularly on television seemed to give it a good boost.

What show has the best WC vibe?

Nintendo Wii, solely because of the controls.

I own a 360 (the console currently in the lead) but I could never get to grips with the PS controls of WCIV, they'd have to change the format to something more akin to Rogue Leader or Jedi Starfighter to control well; not a bad move financially as such titles tend to sell much better than traditional space combat titles, but what can I say, I'm a purist.

On the other hand the Wiimote seems perfectly designed for a space combat title.

When it comes to controls, the Playstation 3 doesn't have just PS controls anymore either. The Sixaxis thing could be just as interesting a new control scheme as using the Wii Remote as a joystick. The PS3 Warhawk flight demo seems to control pretty intuitively. I think the biggest Wii prospects are potentially getting the SNES games on the Virtual Console. On the same note, XBox Live Arcade could theoretically allow even more classic WC titles to be made available.

I'm very skeptical about PS3 control, I'll hold judgement until I've used it however, the demo shown at E3 didn't look like much fun, certainly not very responsive.

Its the pointer functionallity that made me think the Wii controller was appropriate.

I could never get to grips with the PS controls of WCIV...

I don't know. WC4 was great on the PSX with an analog controler. WC3 on the other hand, didn't support the analog stick (though it did support the PSX joystick) and I found it much harder to get used to than wc4. The thing I found annoying about wcIV for the PSX was how the music cuts out every time you use the comms and of course the abridged story.

I really don't think controls should have to be a concern for the next-gen consoles.

I worry a little about the motion sensing of controllers...I tend to move around a lot when I'm playing a game and I have a feeling I would be flying into the ground a lot while I'm jumping around.

So, just a tiny little spiel. Sorry if I go off on a few things, but I'm a tad passionate on the subject. I am a student of Terry Borst, so interactive media is my thing. Also, I teach high school students about the art and history of video games.

My personal stance in the next-gen question is with the 360. It's just because it came out first. I'd never pay as much as Sony's asking for the PS3 (despite the company's notable loss for selling less than build cost). I'd love to get a Wii, but, since I don't have enough money to pay for an oil change, much less X-Mas presents, I'll have to wait.

Anyways, a next-gen WC title would have to come out on the PS3 for primarily one reason: control.

Having a motion-sensitive, wireless controller is obvious for so many reasons. With roll, pitch, and yaw controlled by the twisting and tilting of a controller, WC will enter a whole new era of gameplay. While both Wii and PS3 have motion-sensing capabilities, the remote control-esque Wii might prove awkward. The PS3 "sixaxis," though less one rumble feature, promotes flight controls.

The first time I played WC3 and 4 was on their PS1 adaptadions. WC has a legacy with the PlayStation; even without analog sticks, flying a Hellcat was a breeze. Add analog and motion controls and you have yourself an optimized controller for a new age of WC action.

. . .

The closest thing I have right now is Lego Star Wars II. It was a birthday present.

I can see the control scheme you're describing, but honestly I'd be a lot more optimistic about a point in the direction you wish to head scheme, such as in Freelancer, or even mouse control of wing commander, than tilting the controller to rotate. Quite the opposite of your opinion I believe the pointer functionallity would be essential for bringing such a title to a console. Infact with the conveniently placed A button the Wii could exactly mimic Freelancer controls in a far more enjoyable manner, allowing for a directional front turret which could attract a more mass market.

As the rotation around the z axis would not interfere with pointer functionallity this would allow all rotation to easily be performed with the remote, to me simply rotating the PS3 controller would feel like an awkward disembodied joystick, I have enough trouble with sticks that don't offer sufficent reistance as it is. Opinions of the warhawk control scheme further solidify this belief.

will register soon.

hey all. haven't thought about WC for a while, until i watched the movie on beeb1 last night. reminds me a lot of WC3 on the 3DO. Although it seemed more of a tv series pilot than a movie... hope so.

that aside, the best control system i've seen for wc was on the 3DO (jap import), involved a joystick (2 button) and a touch pad with about a dozen buttons. never knew what it was called, but looked like a numberpad.

anyone know if WC3 is available on the pc?

anyone know if WC3 is available on the pc?

Of course!:)

You'll have to search for it on ebay or second hand though.

THe Dos version is playable in XP using dosbox, and theres also the win95 Kilrathi saga version (a compilation of wc1 -3 redone for win95) but a lot of people have trouble with it in XP.

The game came out for the PC first actually, and as such there are a few minor differences. Due to an issue with CD legnth, Ther TCN news reports are not in the PC version, nor the Hobbes explanation holovid. And because they replaced all the ground missions, there are new CGI scenes instead. These are all in the PSX and 3D0 versions though most people agree that the gameplay is best on PC. Though I've heard good things about the 3DO port, which unlike the PSX version didn't try to emulate the PC version exactly. IIRC the 3DO version also has CGI takeoff sequences not in the other versions.
