Impression of Standoff

Well, I just started playing Standoff and I thought I would give my impression. The team did an a amazing job capturing the feel of WC2/False Peace era combat--perhaps too good a job. (eg, I don't like having so many fighters carrying torpedoes) The gun velocities... were they really this slow in this era?? Whatever, the game rocks, I like having to conserve fighters, but on that note, with ships' weapons only really effective within "whites-of-their-eyes" range, I find it very difficult to pry enemy fighters off of your friends.

It was a good interpretation. The thing is, the speed of the fire was set to a game with the WC1 engine, not the Vision engine, and what the Standoff team did was an approximation. It was very good, in fact, and it did capture the feel of WC2.

I just started playing standoff and hats off to the programers. I think they really caputured the WC feel. One of my biggest things throughout the years of playing WC was not having huge battles (it almost got there with Prophecy). It was always you and your wingman versus the entire Kilrathi military. Standoff delivers epic battles with multiple fighter wings ala Star Wars/Battlestar Galactica style. I can't wait for the next installment!

So far it's amazing. Keep up the great work guys! Haha I've died like 50 times on the assault on the pirate base so far...

I greatly enjoyed it. I've almost forgotten what it was like to play Wing Commander! Great explanation of what was going on up to the Battle of Earth; I like how everyone's complaining about the reduction of force and all, and everyone joining the pirates was a nice touch as well.

Just curious - in this game, will we ever get off the Firekka and onto a 'real' carrier? Or are we doomed forever to a minor escort carrier that couldn't fight a real fight for its life?

You're doomed forever to the Firekka :p. With the exception of the first episode, Standoff is as much about the story of the Firekka as it is about Bradshaw.

That's all right with me; no PTC or massive AMG volleys just means that our fighters will be getting more kills, especially capship kills. No standing back and letting the carrier do all the work... but no getting instakilled while trying to help it either

I think I like it this way

I think the game in itself is fantastic, and the fact that for once you aren't on the best and newest carrier in the fleet (with the exception of WC3/4) is even better, it makes you feel that Bradshaw (or yourself, however you like to put it) is more like 'just another pilot on another carrier' rather than the big saviour of the confederation (even though he/you might be by Episode 5), but I think this idea makes it different from and better than any other wing commander game previously made (that includes WC3/4).

Nice one people, can't wait for episode 4!

I agree. The Firekka is just important enough to make a difference, but still minor enough to stay off of center stage. ^_^

I just can't get over how amazing this game is. You guys are gods and us WC fans are in your debt : )

It always feels great to hear positive comments on our work ! Please consider registering on the forums, this way you'll also be able to send your gauntlet simulator scores to the scoreboards, see how you compare to others ! We also like to recognise who's writing to these forums :)

I dont know much about the battle of earth

I'm not very knowledgable about the battle of earth, i think I can remember reading something about the Lexington taking heavy damage and that it would have been less costly to replace rather than repair it, but beyond that I know nothing, except of course that confed was outnumbered.

BTW popsicle I took your advice and registered, did you get my e-mail?

It's much more elaborate than that. Everyone should run out and buy the novels. They're only a couple dollars at used bookstores or half.com and they add a tremendous amount to the Wing Commander universe. The Lexington was gutted during the Battle of Earth. A new Lexington was commissioned shortly thereafter, and then was lost just prior to WC3. Finally after the war, the original Lexington was refitted and is what you served on in WC4.

Ah, makes much more sense now, I might buy a book or two. You say gutted, I think the name 'Lexington' seems a bit unlucky in the confed fleet, you know, from gutted to replaced to destroyed and, well destroyed again in WC4. (I thought it was a tad cheesy how Paulsen said "oh my god what a disaster!")

It was cheesy allright, but losing a fleet carrier to a crippled tiny little Intrepid and its worn out fighters is a true shame.
