How do flak-cannon's work?

How exactly do they work? Do they shoot explosives into space, or self-detonating warheads?

I always thought they were kinetic weapons. Shells fused for vaious distances, filled with sharapnel. Or perhaps through the magic of targeting computers, automatically fused for the correct range.

That's real Flak...I would imagine in 600 (almost 700, actually considering when Flak was used) it works alittle bit differently than it did.

I never understood.. Why terrans and Kilrathi suddenly replaced the Flak cannons with Laser Turrets......

Laser turrets are more accurate than just flinging explosive energy blasts into space. Either way though both are inadequate to stop enemy fighters without an escort of some kind

But Flak covers more spase...

Against fast fighters Flak should be more effective.....

And just as effective against your own fighters as well. This is just a guess, but I have a feeling friendly fire casualties may have helped replace Flak Cannons.

Actually even in WC1 capships had laser turrets. The Tiger's claw had them.

I'm guessing the flak cannons didn't look so cool in the WC3 game engine.

Still. I would have put a bunch of point-defense guns on the models like the WC Movie thing for compensation. Hey, 8 guns does some damage, but hey, I honestly like the idea of a lot of them.

Needham's suggestion makes sense, but who's going to make weapons less deadly? I figured they'd try to put something more accurate in their place... of course they never did

Yes, and they're much more deadly than the flak in WC2!

I'm not sure, but I think when escorting/defending friendly capships in WC2, your shields may have taken some slight hits as well. There's certainly plenty of red flashes any time the flak cannons light up.

I think you're right Wedge. The lasers turrets on the Tigers Claw were for capship defense as inadequate as that is, not fighter defense. Most capships in WC1 had laser turrets for just such a purpose.

I'm not saying that they would try to make something less deadly, just try to use weapons that were more accurate. And laser turrets would be much more accurate than flak cannons, thus reducing friendly fire casualties.

The Claw has lasers for both point defense and capship assault...

There are 22 single lasers and 8 dual turrets for point defense and 20 laser batteries for larger targets.

I prefer flak cannons to laser turrets. Any torpedo fired from more than 3000 klicks hasn't got a chance of getting through.

I dunno...

the turrets from WC3/4 did'nt strike me as very good at intercepting torps, shoulda mounted Stormfires against torps instead

You forget that stormfires:
a. use limited ammunition
b. are primarily used by Border Worlders [I'm thinking about WC3/4 era]

Fortunately, maces do! :)

Saying about the post about the Tiger's Claw cannons:

The problem was, it never fired anything...
Did it fire anything in SM2 though?
Because I don't remember the claw firing any cannons at all. The little ships just collided into it like dumbasses.
