I agree Unforgiven, But still I'm voting for a Broadsword. With trigger-happy hands and a good timing you can knock out most other ships with only a few direct hits, so you only have to compensate for the slowness of your speed with precision. Then there's a little Maniac streak... go straight for the cap ship and let your wingmen take out the fighters, then make a roll and kick the remaining fighters in the butt!

DEVASTATOR ALL THE WAY,
you dont need to have toprs to finnish CAP ships, one shot from the plasma will waste about everything, it has an insane amount of missiles, and with those turrets you take control of one and pummel anything thats behind you or infront

Give me (though slow) heavy fighters or bombers with thick armor and huge firepower, and I'm a happy pilot... :)

Guns ... Lot's of Guns.

My flying style is to manouvre in close and deliver as much pain as possible, as quickly as possible, at close range. I hate using missiles, so lotsa guns are essential. Reasonable speed and manouvreability are neccesary to get in close. Because the idea is to spend some time manouvreing, and deliver the hurt quickly (as opposed to either going head-to-head or sitting glued to an enemies tail for overly long periods of time), heavy armor is not necessary. Reasonable shields are still desireable, because losta guns usually precludes extreme manouvreablility, so you're going to take some hits.

My top 5 fighters are :

1. Raptor - This get's my top vote, partly because it's a classic, but mostly because it fits my flying style perfectly - mass guns, reasonable speed, shields and manouvreability.

2. Thunderbolt - Another classic heavy. Doesn't have the 'classic' value of the Raptor.

3. Vampire - IMO this is the ideal fighter for me. Awesome firepower, manouvreability and speed. Reasonable, fast recharging shields. However, I've dropped it down to No. 3 because I feel it is really too powerful - a heavy fighter should realistically have to sacrifice something (speed or manouvreability) to gain its heavy firepower.

4. Panther - Probably a more 'realistic' fighter than the Vampire. I'd prefere something with a little more firepower, but without the sickening excesses of the Vampire.

5. Tigershark - Not a heavy fighter, but those charging mass drivers suit my flying style down to the ground. Just hold down the trigger while you manouvre in close, then deliver massive kindness at point blank range.

I've left out the so-called 'super-fighters' the Excalibur, and Lance/Dragon, and the 'Black-Ops' ships.

p.s. Wulf, I notice that you've left my first four choices out of the poll. The overpowered Vampire I can understand, but where are the classic 'heavies'?

IMHO, "jack-of-all-trades" would traditionally be the medium fighters, ie Scimitar (hmm...), Rapier, Hellcat, etc. Tigershark is already labelled as a general purpose fighter.

Personally, I prefer heavier fighters. As AzraeL said, where are the heavies?

...4me, it depenz completely on the mission, and what ships are avail. to fly it in... I generally go for the avail. ship that has the mostest amount of speed and missile capacity. I can't pick out a fave that I use more than any other.

...that said, it goes without saying that if you CAN use the Excal (WC3) or the Dragon (WC4) on a given mission, then for Pete's sake DO so!..

(oh, wait: I just "said" it..... well, whatever...)
:D

Not so. you take MANY more hits if you can't manuver. Too many to make the extra shielding and armor worth it. I prefer to dogfight my way into a battle, using manuverability over thick armor. Give me a Piranha and I can strip a capship clean of turrets, and slaughter it's escorts. I LOVE the Piranha!

Thunderbolts. Nice, big ships. Good speed, good armor. Admittedly crappy missile load but kick ass guns. :)

Panthers too. Or even Arrows for pure overwhelming the enemy speed. :)

The only bomber I felt comfortable in was Armada's Banshee. Mmmm Mmmm Good!

The T-Bolts made missiles really unnecessary though. The only time I really dont use guns is when I use the torpedo on corvettes. ANYthing else I can kill with guns.

Ahhhhhh T-bolt....What a f*****g grat ship.... i play always with T-bolt (when availeable)

I love the Vampire. But the Tigershark is also nice. For me a ship does not need much shield-protection.... it must have speed and a good turning rate or however it calls. *g*
Shields usually have lots of weight and so go on those quailities. The ship I really didn't like was the Devastator... it is so slow. I feel like an aim on the present table then. Bombers are definitely not my ship class. Even if they have good weapons.
