Friendly wingmen do hit things, about as often as enemy fighters.
For WC2, phase shielding changes the game quite a bit. They often throw enemy fighters at the Concordia that don't even have torpedoes. And there's a few capships that literally cannot be destroyed - if you torpedo them, the game just freezes.
