Ahhh but the setting of my video is set between WC4 and Prophecy. There is no war going on. This is before the Nephilim even attacked.

There is going to be three Pelicans and six Excalibur escort ships. My questions remain:

- In order to have escorts, is the convoy is most likely military?
- If the convoy is military, would they carry civilian cargo?

Actually further information can be seen at my video project's site, located here.

they can hire merc guild escorts, it dosn't have to be military. but if they are carrying somthing that confed thinks should be protected they probably would have atleast a token escort (whether confed or merc guild)

Well, most militaries engage in peacekeeping missions between major conflicts. They have to keep themselves sharp, after all. But if you really need an excuse to have Excaliburs flying with the civilians, just say that there's been a large amount of pirate activity in that system over the past few weeks or something.

I doubt that mercenaries would be able to get their hands on Excaliburs.

its not exactly the most up to date fightercraft so some might be for sale though probably very expensive. but confed probably wouldn't go around hiring half-rate mercs.

Just like how mercenaries today can buy F-14s. Wait, no...

and how many merc air forces are there? the demand would probably be mostly in africa where whoever they are fighting are poorer than they are.

I'm really gonna have to agree with the idea of Mercs getting Excals. That's nearly an impossibility, that IS still considered a quality ship (both by people here at the CIC, and Confed apparently) as they are still used in heavy amounts in SO. I'll assume that's because Confed likes the use of the craft.

Second, the pirate idea is a good thought about having an escort, and I'm not quite sure where your transports are heading (sorry, no time now to read your script) if they're into the BW/Landreich/Kilrathi area, it might make a bit of sense as to having the military, since those are independent areas from Confed.

Place someone important enough to warrent Confed protection. (Although who that might be could be tossed around to make that point foolish after a while.)

after world wars one and two, even many of the top line aircraft were for sale (probably with weapons removed). confed might have had a few spares and could have sold them to a merc group that was on friendly terms with them.

Okay further clarification is obviously needed here guys.

The Excals escorting my convoy are ALSO operated by Confed, so here we have six Confed Excaliburs and three Confed Pelicans.

Sorry for any confusion.

:D

Now, they are running a leg through the Tyr system on their way to who knows where.

Well, the Flying Tigers flew P-40s...and the Republicans advanced I-16s...

Both of those groups were fighting for one of the sides in a major war, though. It was in the interests of their backers to see they were well equipped. Typical freelance mercs wouldn't get any of that stuff.

Best, Raptor

ARE they freelance? Mr. CamW doesn't seem to hav etold us much...

I think it'd be possible to equip freelancers with Excals...if their backer was Charlie's Angels...or something...

a convoy of that size would be too big of a target and it would be nearly impossible to hide its existance or route because of the scale. smaller convoys probably have a better chance of sneaking past.
Funny.
That's the same argument opponents of the convoy system made during both World War I and II (the fact that it worked very well during WWI didn't seem to dissuade the new opponents during WWII until it started working once again). Its a big target, but its got a lot of protection. It'll require a lot more than a flight of fighters to take down the escorts and kill the convoy (can you imagine attacking a target like that in WC3, for example?).
As for hiding convoys...
It already seems fairly difficult to hide them. Local marauding ships (such as fighters on a four point patrol pattern) seem to be able to find traces of them readily enough. Putting a big convoy together and giving it a large escort means that you don't need to worry about one or two ships launching a raiding mission (more than one or two ships is a sizable military presence, and would hopefully attract the attention of a large friendly fleet response).
I guess the main thing is this. Remember the nebula convoy strike mission in WC3? There were three seperate groups of Kilrathi ships all making the run from the jump point to the Kilrathi base. Fighting each group, one at a time, is doable, if somewhat annoying. Now imagine what fighting all three of them at once would be like?
Each side has the exact same strength allocation, but the Kilrathi get their's all at once, instead of piecemeal.

It's called not putting all your eggs in one basket. :D

The reason they had all the protection around a huge convoy during WWI and WWII was because they really couldn't detect U-Boats without sonar, and sonar wasn't developed until what, like mid-WWII, and after not all ships had sonar.

Now, it would be stupid to use a massive convoy because all ships use sonar and can detect submarines.

::cough:: plot spoilers ::cough::

In Wing Commander, space after the Kilrathi War was kind of devoid of action, save pesky pirates and Kilrathi raiders. But surely even a weak escort of Exacaliburs could defend against those...
