wow.. those look sweet.

I do wonder though why they look so different from the cockpits as they appear in game. Were those not taken from the final models? Or did Origin add stuff in by hand after rendering?

I'm certainly not complaining. If I were to use these I'd have to redo the cockpits I have already done for Vegastrike and shuffle around instruments, or I could photoshop in the missing stuff, or some combination of both, and I can think of far worse things. Mostly I'm just curious about the differences :D It's a rather interesting look behind the scenes for me.

I suspect though that I am not meant to use these in a mod, as they are JPG. As such, the purple isn't really transparent. Of course I can paint the purple areas transparent, but the edges will all have a purple tinge to them where the cockpit is blended/antialiased with the background (see pic)

The differences

Centurion: looks the same

Tarsus: to the left of the bottom left monitor is a little box where speed is shown. In game, there is another right on top of it for set speed that's missing in the render. Also missing: at top middle two boxes for AUTO and fuel stats

Galaxy: that small monitor on the right has a twin in game on the left. Can't see the vertical box to the right of the rightmost monitor because in game it is zoomed in more. Underneath the leftmost small monitor in game are two horizontal boxes. The two vertical boxes to the left of the large monitor are not there in game, because the second small monitor is there instead. The two center monitors are closer in game (touching almost)

Orion: In game is zoomed in way more, you only see to the edges of the monitors. There are two yellow/black stripy things on the left. In game there is no central mini-monitor, instead there's a horizontal box for energy/blaster power. There is also a missing horizontal box top middle for AUTO in the shot here.

Turret: left vertical box/gauge is in game a set of buttons instead.

you just asked for cockpit screen shots..

you didn't specify anything about format, size, lighting, etc..

so I just crapped out a few quickies.. ;)

as for differences.. I dunno.. I have what I have..

They look pretty cool either way, although the purpleish background is a little weird.
They also look a little more high res then what's in the games...

Bring back plenty of great memories of running around gemini.....

These are the Privateer cockpits, as extracted directly from the game... they're missing all the neat bits (VDU graphics and whatnot), but they're good for comparing the finished design to Captain Johnny's 3D models.

I'm curious as to why Privateer had its cockpits designed in 3D - the models are a lot more detailed (and cover a lot more area) than anything seen in the game. I wonder if they considered doing Privateer in the RealSpace engine (like Strike Commander)... then it would have had 3D cockpits.

Eh, I'm not sure I would want them in a Prophecy mod, or any mod for that matter. As much as I loved Privateer and the look of the cockpits, the limited visibility made it very difficult to see anything, far more than WC1 or 2. That goes double for the Tarsus.

I like the limited view. Gives a more realistic feeling to the ship. Besides, you can always turn the cockpit off in Prophecy.

Actually it wasn't me that asked for anything :p If you are open to requests though, I would love to get those as PNG with either transparency, or black background so I can make them transparent myself without worrying about a purple halo.

Of course, Vegastrike can do actual 3d cockpits, and I'd love to see the 3d versions in game, which would be technically feasible. What are the chances something like that would be allowed? I think I'd be happy with anything though, see the shot below :D

no i cant see the pics on bobs link
Sorry about that.. I didn't know that thread would be linked elsewhere. You need to have an account and be logged in the Vegastrike forums to view the pics. I'll attach one here for you.

Pic is a Vegastrike screenshot with the Galaxy cockpit and a closeup of my Orion model (which was used in The Reckoning, though someone there added actual textures to it hehe) Some tweaking left to do with the text. At least it all works
