Classification of TCS Eisen

They come in different sizes?

No, Tolwyn just didn't want to look bad breaking the speed limit in the Vesuvius, according to "The Price of Entertainment"

Somebody has been mentioning the Eagle class escort carriers. Is there anywhere I can find the specs on them?

Nope -- they don't even have a proper class name (we see one called the TCS Eagle in the WC3 novel...). They're 'dedicated' escort carriers which Confed brought online at the very end of the war -- presumably because the transport-conversions like the Tarawa were such a success.

The only thing the WC3 novel says about them is that they are slightly larger than the Victory and have a modern design, IIRC.

Being similar in size to the Ranger class light carriers would imply that they carry a similar fighter compliment--3 or 4 squadrons with a total of maybe 40 fighters. On the other hand, the extra space might have been taken up by a bigger powerplant/engines or by thicker armor...

Length doesn't really imply that... the Bengal class, which carries 104 fighters, for example, is a mere 700 m long. That's 20 m shorter than the Ranger class.

Well, I was interpreting "larger" to mean total displacement instead of length, which would imply that the Eagle class would have similar bulk and interior space to the Ranger...

The actual quote about the Eagle is "...slightly larger than Victory but similar in configuration. It was one of the latest models of escort carrier, but its sleek, modern lines were marred by battle damage".

I guess there's no telling wheter the similarities to the Victory's configuration mentioned there include the deck and hangar bays layouts and sizes or not. Still, seeing as how these carriers were created due to the success of the Tarawa-style CVEs, I suppose that Confed would try to improve on some of the earlier design's shortcomings, like the limited fighter storage space and defensive capabilities.

I hate to actually comment on the original topic, but I've changed my opinion. After reviewing some of the leaps and bounds necessary to place classes on some of the other ships in the Wing Commander universe, the data that we have on the Eisen is more than enough to safely call it a Vesuvius.

Nope -- to early in the timeline. The Hades-class doesn't enter service until after WCP. Plus, the Eisen transferred 84 fighters to the Midway... and then kept on fighting. The Hades-class only carries 30 fighters.

Anyone ever notice that in the mod "Unknown Enemy" the Eisen shows up as a Vesuvius-class? I just thought that was funny... not very relevant, though.

It's best to avoid old threads.

In any case, the Eisen is a Vesuvius-class carrier, so there's nothing really wrong with it popping up in UE. (The St Helen's did in SO!)
