Chapter XI - Things Fall Apart

Yes, somewhat. But perhaps not as pyrrhic as it seems. This whole mission into Deneb had been one big failure, really. But sometimes, out of defeat comes a much greater victory...

I'm getting that big surprise feeling...
smile.gif

Ever thought of writing a story based on Privateer?

Touché.

1. Oh never mind, it was just Polish character encoding that made the a look like an r. Um, is there meant to be an accent over the a?
2. There getting worse than a plague of lemmings you know?
tongue.gif

5. Well I know I wouldn't feel safe until I actually landed.
6.
biggrin.gif

11. Well it's the closest a human can get to a Killie expression. >^.^<
12. I see.
smile.gif

15. You're welcome.
smile.gif

17. Better.
21. Well just try not step over the edge.
22. But you must admit it was predictable.
23. Yet, albeit, notwithstanding, nevertheless or nonetheless could've been better.
24. That's what I'm here for.
wink.gif

25. Well there's no sense multiplying words without reason.
26. The second, since "vast burst" sounds naff.
28. Actually I'd have though of moving the comma to after either. *shrug* And how did I know you would take instinct?
smile.gif

29. No. I just think use of a starting but is only justified for long sentences.
30. Actually I wasn't thinking of intact for the exact same reason - inapropriate. Yes, "in one piece" would be good - very good in fact.
31. Well it better reflects, "So much for trying."
32. No, I don't like their excessive use in semi-formal writing - but the point wasn't getting rid of elipsis, it was to better tie the fact that he stopped mid-strike to stare at the screen in surprise. Aw heck, it's your story.
33. "Started back" is perfectly alright and better than "started again" in my opinion...Of course that's all it is - an opinion.
34. Oh, it's a system. I thought you meant a ship.
tongue.gif

Would it have been more curious if I had said it was your worst chapter to date?
smile.gif

The combat scene was more than adequate. It was fitting, mainly due to the feeling of impatience with which they neared the jump point.
About the poetry: In that case, you really need to have a word with those voices in your head - set them straight - let 'em know who's boss.
biggrin.gif

And Hharak was hardly defenceless - he had claws.

Dammit, I knew I should have put on that raincoat when I went out to lunch. But no, it was just a little bit of rain.

Klaus: Nah, Privateer isn't my specialty. I know very little of it; Matrix could probably do it better - if he wanted to.

Matrix:
Touche?
smile.gif

1. Yes, probably
smile.gif
. I just type Deja Vu in, and let Word decide. I know, I probably shouldn't trust Word, but...
2. I'll keep that in mind, but I can't promise anything
smile.gif
.
5. Well, Weaver's slightly different.
11.
smile.gif

21. I'll try not to.
22. Yes, but I don't mind.
tongue.gif

23. Well, they're all very nice words and all that, but I don't think they really fit.
26. Would it be all right if I changed that second out to forth?
28. Instinct
smile.gif
.
29. Next you'll be telling me that sentences shouldn't start with and
wink.gif
.
30. Ok. Mind you, that's also not quite true, but it gets the point across.
31. Perhaps, yes.
32. Well, I can't let you win them all, Mac
smile.gif
. Regardless of the reasons, in this particular case I prefer the way it is. It just seems... better. Dunno.
33. I know that started again doesn't sound quite right. But started back suggests that they just came from there, and are now going back.
34. All this talk of the Morpheus System, and you thought it was a ship?
smile.gif

Worst? Well, it would be just as curious, not more curious
smile.gif
.
Well, I'm glad the combat scene was fitting. And now, I guess I'd better get on with the next - and last - one.
The voices told me to shut up and do as I'm told
smile.gif
. I'm afraid I'm quite powerless.

You mean I'd do a better job than you? I seriously doubt that. Even though you don't have the spirit of a merchant/rogue, you know much more about Privateer than I do. But you guys have given me an idea...of course I really should finish Recall first.
smile.gif

Yes. As in, "I yield."

2. It's probably just another punctuation phase.
smile.gif

5. Slightly?
smile.gif

22. As long as that's the desired effect.
23. Whatever - the word for all occasions.
tongue.gif

26. Hmm. Yeah, I guess so.
28.
biggrin.gif
Yeah.
29. How did you guess?
smile.gif

32. I don't intend to win them all...especially in Proving Grounds.
wink.gif

33. Whatever.
34. Aw heck, how would I know? I've only visited Fariss, Humboldt, Clarke and Potter quadrants.
smile.gif

I suggest you threaten to put your head in a vice if the voices in there act up again.

Well, don't forget that you're the one specialising in Steltek. And the Priv plot would almost have to be reduced to be an interesting book; so, you have an advantage there, rather. Besides, I'm sure you'd enjoy describing the Steltek base... that is, if you haven't already planned doing that elsewhere
smile.gif
.

Oh, and there's nothing wrong with writing two or three or four stories at the same time
smile.gif
.

29. Oh, another one of those instinct things
smile.gif
.
32. Only because you couldn't
smile.gif
. Hmm, I wonder if I could beat you in the Dralthi by now. As I recall, I failed miserably last time
biggrin.gif
.
34. And Vega Sector, even if you're still in Kurasawa
wink.gif
.

The voices know me too well
smile.gif
. They know that I wouldn't do that. But they've become more cooperative lately. Currently, they're telling me various Kilrathi words, and what they mean
smile.gif
.

Matrix: the more ideas we give you, the better. We'll have more excellent stories to read.

Quarto: Just don't start talking to them voices out loud, or someone might throw you in the paddy wagon. And then we'll have one less writer.

Got WC2 for DOS from a friend. Now let's see if I can get this to work.

Heh. Now I know what's the Scimitar, Hornet, Raptor, Rapier, Sabre, Ferret, Epee, etc.

And now I know that the Epee IS a real space flying toilet paper. Doh! that was a pain!

Ah, so now you actually know what I'm talking about

Och, no laddie. I think the descriptions fit nicely. I just would NOT like to fly in a Ferret with just one mass driver.
biggrin.gif

Now if you placed Weaver in an Epee instead of a Ferret, with just that mass driver...

Hmmm... I find it curious that you boyos must speak like Paladin so frequently.

Well now laddie, 'tis nothing curious. Paladin has a neat accent, is all.

I've actually flown a Ferret with one mass driver several times. Usually, it's when I re-play WC2 after a long break, and find myself crashing into a Sartha or two (you can get a lot of kills that way
biggrin.gif
).

The final scene from this chapter also remembers me of the final scene from SO2, with Maniac adrift in space, in the Morningstar.

Yes, in fact you can almost fire indefinitely. Unfortunately, it's not that easy to lose one gun. I have, also, flown the Epee with one gun left. I get more kills that way. Drain vs recharge rate almost equal.

Actually, what I meant was that you can get a lot of kills by crashing into people

. Generally speaking, I still prefer to keep both my guns

Not in an Epee. At any rate, I did slam to a lot of Sartha. Three at the most, if they're slightly damaged. I did mention in another topic that I tried ramming a Fralthra with a Ferret.
Heh, heh, heh, another dead ape!

Well, generally speaking, I hate the Epee. Because it seems to be made of paper, you can't really lose one gun without losing the rest of the ship.

I feel comfortable in a Broadsword - reminds me of the B-25s & B-29s
