Capt. Paulse(o)n

Ripper

Peace Through Superior Firepower
O.K., a discussion that seemed to want to be, but kept getting derailed.

I say he was a useless, lilly-livered weasel who saved hisself and let his crew bite the dust. What say you?

he was a bureauacratic mother fucking sonnova bitch who did the gene pool a whole hellova lotta good when he died (hopefully he didn't have any kids) I could say more but that pretty much gets my point across and i don't want to spend the rest of the night typing this post

I say that I resent that comparison and will persecute you for making it.

He flew an administrative desk for years and eventually got a job commanding a peace-time carrier by being a Black Lance lackey. Simple as that.

He didnt have any vision just like Tolwyn had,so he was just a puppet.Without a vision you are not going anywhere...
Im not saying that I agree with Tolwyn`s ideas in WC4 but at least he had a vision

Paulsen was a Pawn.Just that

Paulsen didn´t save himself. He tried to.

Good catch. But he still let his crew fry.

WW, I thought we had managed to have a certain amount of respect for one another, obviously I was wrong.:(

;)

In my opinion, Putting Paulson on the Lexington was just another way that Tolwyn could control what Blair saw of the whole incident on the frontier, I am basing this on the fact that orders are issued to clear the flight deck when Seether arrives etc. and Blair doesn't have the whole picture when he defects, it is more a leap of faith for him, trusting Eisen and the others that they are not "traitors" so to speak.

Ripper, I'd interpret that comment (WW made) as a joke, because of the reference to the weasel in your original post, sometimes its hard to convey what you really mean in a post, cause there is little emotion

TPOF novel says that Paulson was put in command of the Lex because of convience. I interpreted that to mean he was the only one who was part of the "Plan" that was of the right rank and close enough to be of assistance. Since we never really find out why Paulsen is put in command in the game, I'd put my faith in the book.

Paulson effectively bought his position on the Lexington. The Project had, in the past, needed his position and money, and he needed a combat command to get promoted.

Did he have any other commands prior to the Lexington?

It would be fairly unusual for a captain to have a carrier as his first command. Maybe something small like an escort carrier might work as a first command, but a carrier requires a lot more work than a regular warship of the same size, and is also considered more valuable. So chances are that Paulson had at least some command experience in his past.
Now what that might have been, I can't say. For all we know, his only other command job was on a corvette running escort duties in safe zones.

(a) It was commented on that he wasn't the sort of person that would normally be commanding a fleet carrier...

(b) It was also mentioned that he had no previous combat commands (which would be the reason for (a) ).

I know. It gave me a chance to quote Tolwyn. Or butcher the Tolwyn quote, to be more accurate.

No combat command doesn't necessarily mean no command experience whatsoever. Now he SHOULD have had combat experience before going to the Lexington, but apparently didn't.

okay, I got it. Paulson commanded a cubicle on earth and his combat experience consisted of fighting the deadly expresso machines!:D:D:D

Hey, if he at least fought the eternally-evil laser printers and photocopiers, he qualifies for any combat command :).

...and the evil Confed personnel administrator, Catbert! (not to mention his pointy-haired commanding officer)...
