An Early Invitation to the Big Bash (May 10, 2010)

The days are getting longer, flowers are starting to bloom and trees are turning green (attention Southern Hemisphere vistors: please imagine the opposite), so that must mean it's nearly Birthday season again! The 12th CIC Birthday Party will be held in just three months on August 10, 2010. Things get going at 7:00 pm Eastern US time (4:00 pm Pacific and 11:00 pm GMT), so the event falls on August 11 for some people. As usual, the venue is channel #Wingnut on the irc.wcnews.com server. Newcomers are always welcome to drop by via our easy Java interface. As Kris likes to point out, this year the CIC starts to span three decades (1990s, 2000s & 2010s), and there's a lot to celebrate! Check back for more details in the months ahead, and see you there!

I don't need to imagine anything, it was a reasonably cold morning today.

As for the image: oh, the glory days of 800X600 and XP. Classic stuff. Does that make our 1996 browsing with Win 95 on 640x480 ancient?

I used to read the Origin Chat Zone with NCSA Mosaic, so, yeah, I think we're ancient.

Yeah, except I think still had Windows 3.1 when I first got online. My phone runs in higher res than 640x480.

You're all spoilt. I didn't get the opportunity to go on-line until 2000. And guess what was one of the first things I looked up? Wing Commander! (:

Same here, except I did it for five years on 14.4, 28.8 and then 33.6 kbps modems. Only one member of the CIC staff had broadband internet when the site launched, and of course, when Secret Ops came out!

If you look back in the news archives, you can see the number of pictures we used increased dramatically shortly after 2000. Before that point, we tried to keep the whole front page loading in under 75 kilobytes (it's actually rarely over 500 k today, which is very lightweight in 2010).

Very lightweight! Even with my new connection, I still despise bloated front pages, especially when I remember how such sites used to be like on dial-up. And those pages where people stick in YouTube clips that automatically download and play? Horrible!

But that's just me whingeing again, I know.
