My WC1 SM1 mission got everyone killed...! Funeral Bug w/ Video!

-danr-, I confirm what sgupta said: it's also in the DOS version of WC (I just had it last week, while replaying SM1 in Dosbox!!!)

Birthday Poll - Count Your Rings (August 11, 2006)

I joined in in February 2003, but have been visiting the site for more than six months before (at the time, I was mainly looking at the "technical" threads: what to do if the joystick is not seen, how to make the WC games run in versions newer than Win 98, that sort of things ;) ).

    Impressive, Aren't They? (February 12, 2006)

Although WC1 had no competitor when it was released, and WC2 brought a deeper development in the story, I think WC3 was the most impressive game in the series.

Pick Your Favorite Sibling (October 1, 2005)

Sorry everybody, but in addition to WC, I also have Strike Commander and Ultima, but unfortunately have never been able to install it! So I voted for Ultima...

    Your first Wing Commander game?

My first Wing Commander was WC1 in 1990/91 on a 386DX/33Mhz. Everything controlled by the mouse at the time (which I found impossible for WC3 / WC4).

Choose Your Favorite Station (June 6, 2005)

:) I was surprised New Constantinople had so few votes. Now I know!

How Crazy Are You? (May 15, 2005)

I've purchased the five games (floppy version for WC1, WC2, Secret Operations and Secret Missions, CD version for WC3, WC4 and Prophecy). I averaged the single cost at $30 each, and thus voted for the 101-250 range, but I could have probably chosen the third possibility... I've been offered...

    Taking damage

Another option is to go "offroad" and avoid the mines or asteroids fields! ;)

    New DosBox version 0.61

Did you do something special? I have the speech package but did not install it yet (I did a few years ago, but then my computer wasn't running XP!)

Top 10 fav games all time

    1. Privateer (my favorite in the WC games, followed by WC2) 2. Civilization II 3. Call to Power (which I mention because it is different from Civilization, even if it's the same idea, so I do not include it in the Civ series) 4. Under a killing moon (but I also liked - and have - the other...

And you may also find some new games on sites specialized with electronic sales.

Wing Commander Games and Windows XP - A Summary

WC3 runs under Windows XP, without any other utility (such as DosBox or VDMS). But, like THE_WUQCKED, I experience bad sound (cuts).

    Control option: mouse or keyboard?

I voted mouse, because you could really control your ship in WC1 & 2 (left button= gun, right button + movement = roll / speed, both = missile). Since I played Privateer only on my laptop, I used both mouse and keyboard (depending on where I were, and finally I remember it was sometimes easier...

Cant Run Privater Through Dos Box!?!?

I had a similar problem because dosbox uses the normal DOS names (8+3 characters), which means that if you installed Privateer in a directory with a longer name, dosbox will not be able to mount it... In my particular case, the directory (Windows XP long names) is: c:\games\wing...

    Fav WC game

WC1 being the first game in the Wing Commander universe I played, I must admit I still like it better than the other ones (though I didn't play Prophecy yet). Nevertheless, I would choose Privateer as my favorite, because even though there's a story, you can fly whatever mission you like...
