Are you shooting at pirate, retro, and Kilrathi bogies only, or blasting everything that gets too close? It really helps to be target selective...

    stuck

Welcome to the club. Just about everyone has replayed that mission 40 times or more. The only solution is to cheat by editing units.csv, reducing the Demon's speed and putting laser turrets on the Draymans.

Upgrade Availability and Central File Locations?

Look at the ship's stats screen. It'll list mounts and their capabilities, like 'light medium heavy'. Mounts with autotrackers installed would show 'light medium heavy autotracking'. And if you can afford it, the more the merrier. :) I think you can only have one autotracker per mount, though.

    Black screen when launching game.

98SE doesn't come with a native firewall. Unless you're using a 3rd-party firewall like ZoneAlarm, Norton Personal Firewall, ect, the pierce firewall settings won't help you much. PR juggles a lot of files around as it loads, and a heavily fragmented drive can slow the loading down bigtime. Try...

    Ships to buy ?

The Famous Four from the origional (Tarsus, Orion, Galaxy, Centurion) are available from the start. You can buy a Demon by signing up with the merc's guild. You get access to a pirate Talon after completing Tayla's drug runs. Completing the Goodin/Terrel missions and blowing up the Steltek...

    Cranky bits

That happened to me, too, with militia fighters jumping on me, too. It's a Retro sabotauge plot, secretly replacing the good guy's oxygen with crazy gas?

    3rd Oxford Mission

Wait till you get to Palan and wind up on the wrong end of a few dozen Demons. They won't look so harmless then.

    weapon problem

Lasers and/or tachyons are your best bet. And don't forget, friendorfoe missiles are your friends, as is an afterburner. Plasmas would work, but their short range and too slow speed means you'de have to get close to the target to deal a mortal blow. Concentrate on one, and keep dogging on him...

Upgrade Availability and Central File Locations?

I've seen the Repair AI only at Oxford, and only a couple of times. I've found autotracking at Perry, N. Detroit, and N. Constaninople, and tachyons only at Perry. Never seen a cloak at Perry,

    weapon problem

The Talons do seem a bit tougher in WCU than they are in Priv Remake. They don't fly any better, just seem to have better damage resistance.

    philosophic problem with Jump Points

Really, the only way to 'jam' a jump point would be to blockade it with so many heavily armed ships as to insure the destruction of just about anything coming out. Even then, that's not a true jamming, the jump wormholes still work, and it won't stop the blockader's enemies from finding a way to...

    philosophic problem with Jump Points

Origon's history, EA apparently could care less. So unless us wingnuts make it, it probably isn't gonna happen.

    philosophic problem with Jump Points

In the WC games I've played (3, 4, and Prophecy) the afterburners used fuel, yet the engines didn't seem to. Energy reserves only powered weapons. You didn't have a jump drive, instead you counted on a carrier to take you through jumps. In Privateer, you have a jump drive, which is the only...

    Help with WC Privateer Remake

He may be better off just buying a new nForce based PC and maxing out the memory on it, and keeping the old box around for oldskool games that won't run on a modern PC. (Like the origional Privateer! :) )
