212 Squadron - "The Old Man's Eyes And Ears"
Anyone notice that the Wing Commander Movie's DVD subtitles are VERY wrong? They go as far as calling Maniac "Morris" in one scene (where Angel wakes him out of his bunk after Rosie's death). Most of the time, the names are incorrect, but isnt this a bit much?

Oh, I wouldn't know since I don't have DVD. But there were quite a few glaring errors/omissions in the WC4 DVD as well, wasn't there?

Getting captions/subtitles right is very difficult appearently. I always hate it when subtitles are wrong (I live in the Netherlands). Especially numbers are bad. Translating fourty-seven with seventy-four for instance(that's because in Dutch we say numbers like four-and-seventy). Names is also bad.
The current subtitler of Dragonball-Z is bad!! 'Will Vegeta and Trunks succeed in becoming ascendant Saiyans?' is translated as if it was 'Will Vegeta and Trunks succeed in ascending to Saiyins?'. They are Saiyins from birth, you can't ascend to that. Their goal is to ascend beyond super-saiyan. At least the current one doesn't spell Saiyan as Saiya-yin like the previous one did.
But all this is kind of OT, just to give an example of other bad subtitles.

Eh...
I'd like to point out that there's a difference between subtitles and translation...

For example, an American movie with French subtitles... the subtitles have to REFLECT what the actors say in English... but at the same time be short enough for the viewer to have time to read without losing track of the image...

If on the other hand, the movie was TRANSLATED into French, the French voices replacing the English... well then the translation would have to modified so that it matches the "lips movement length" of the English-speaking actors, you agree? :)
You never see the French "dubber" (is that what you say?) keep talking while the actors' lips are sealed...

In this light therefore, some difference in translation are understandable... but writing "Morris" instead of "Maniac", or 74 instead of 47... that's a bit much...

Don't blame Unforgiven for not knowing that, he's from a country where people can read ;)

I believe the movie DVD will be coming out in Germany some time soon. Hopefully it's region two with both English and German audio tracks. A dubbed version would be interesting to see, and it's always nice to have a region 2 copy (with the movie nazi's clamping down on region free players).

My WC DVD came from Signapore. It doesnt show any particular region code, but it does have a selection for the audio. You can select English, German or French. Would this DVD be one of those region 2 types KV?

Hmm... I'm not sure. It's definitely not like my WC DVD. It has a Region 1 logo on the back. Languages : English and French. Subtitles : English.

Wow, this is strange! I could not find any region code logo at all on the case! I havent looked at the subtitle selections yet, but I remember when I first ran the DVD, the subtitles were displayed in English, and I also remember turning them off and seeing a selection for English, German and French. Now Im curious! :)

I think there's also a WCM Region 4, but I can't imagine why that would have French or German. Yeah, you might have a Region 2 there. Or a Region 0.

[00:35] <Cpl_Hades> English, French and German audio? That's not region 1..
[00:39] <Cpl_Hades> Actually.. my region 1 DVD says it has a french track on the case.. but its not in the menu
[00:39] <KrisV> You must have the same case as me
[00:39] <KrisV> Region 1 NTSC logo?
[00:40] <Cpl_Hades> In fact.. there just isn't a french track. English and English Dolby 5.1 are the only options. And only English for subtitles
[00:40] <Cpl_Hades> Yeah
[00:40] <Cpl_Hades> Under the Fox logo
[00:40] <KrisV> Yup
[00:40] <Cpl_Hades> "English - Hearing Impaired" are the only subtitles in fact

If you really have a French and German audio tracks, you might have a Region 2 or Region 0 or something. Where did you get it?

I ordered the DVD from ebay, and the box it was shipped in originated from Signapore! (got here rather quickly too!)

I am going to look more closely at the options in the menus and see what is there. Oh, I was also wondering if the DVD is only in widescreen format or both standard and widescreen? The DVD I have only has the widescreen format.
I have to admit, the widescreen is better, especially on a brand new Sony 65" HDTV! (the one at the store!:D)

DVD type

Ok I am at home now and have the DVD case in front of me. There isnt any region logo at all! I was incorrect on the subtitles choices, this DVD has English, Chinese and Malay! It spells color "colour". Distributed by Buena Vista International. Im checking the menu options now....

The options menu only has English audio, but it does have the options for Chinese, Malay and English subtitles. It makes me wonder what region code this DVD is, since there is no logo!

It could also be an "S. M. Copy", a known pirate format. S. M. is the initials of the company that makes them, but I don't recall the company's name. Several countries in the southeast reagion of Asia do not have copyright laws.

I bought mine with Encore 5x before any region coding. Since this is a game and not a movie I am surprise it would any region coding. It may only be the format. (Pal/NTSC)
