There's a few reasons why a simple remake isn't likely, though:
* You're talking about developing a game based on twelve year old unfamiliar code (the people who developed the original WC games are all gone) which in all likelyhood doesn't exist anymore.
* It didn't sell the last time they tried it. People didn't buy Kilrathi Saga... and Origin dropped any plans to 'upgrade' more old games (hence the promised Ultima Collection became shovelware). When there's no money in it, there's no interest.
I have a few prob's w/ what you just said:
1) A remake wouldn't be based on "unfamiliar code"; the code could (and by definition pretty much *would*) be all-new. Rather, it's the spirit, storyline, events, etc. of the old game that would be be retained from the "old" game. That makes it hella less hard to do than what yer proposing (--if I understood U correctly)
2) Sure, KS didn't sell too well the first time around. However, w/ the prices it's fetching on e-bay/etc. these days, is there any doubt that there would be a healthy amount of interest/$$$/profit in it for Origin/EA if they were to re-issue WC: KS?...
After all, there's a loyal core of WC nuts like us already out there, and they already have the game "in the can"; they wouldn't have to re-write nothing. All they'd hafta do is just dust off the old masters and press a limited-run # of copies for sale.
Whatever money they'd wanna sink into advertising for it would be proportional to the size of the run they're planning. Then they could close up shop on it for anopther 5 years, and bring out another limited-run, etc.--rather like Disney does with their old "classics on VHS" (Fantasia, etc.... and don't even get me started on Disney...grrr...)
