i heard that the nazi's were planning to build a railgun to attack england with. then the v1, v2 and the blasted to dust v3

The Nazis tried a lot of things. Hmmm, just like the Kilrathi. And both tried to commit genocide. Hmmm. Creepy.

I remember the A-10 ICBM they planned to use to hit the US, a three stage booster with a monstrous warhead capable of reaching Seattle from Berlin... What if the first ever space shot of the human race had been a bomb destined for new York, signed Adolph Hitler? THat would have said something about our race...

How would they possibly be able to build a railgun if they didn't even have magnetic particle accelerators. How would they speed up a cylinder of aluminium to .5c without a particle accelerator

That's something that almost occured thanks to Messers Truman, Stalin, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Kruschev and a few others since then...

THe first space shots WERE on military basis... So I guess al we missed was the big bad boom... But all in all I miss the Cold War. Even thought back then I was a Commie by force.

You miss the Cold War? It did give sort of a boost to the Soviet and US military sciences and research with hardware and weapons. But it also could have been devistating. I mean there were, and still are, tons of nuclear warheads sitting in silos just waiting to be launched, many times over that there would be very little inhabitable surface left of Earth! I dont think I would want to be around after a massive nuclear war to scrounge around for whatever food or water (contaminated by radiation) might be left.

But 50 years of peace with 40 000 nukes proved once and for all that inventing the atom bomb was the best thing we ever did... it made war useless, unwinnable. No side started a war because winning was impossible. The concept of Mutually Assured Distruction made sure that if one side pulled the trigger, they would die just as bad as their target. This allowed a globalization of the effects of a World War and thus noone was in the mood to start a war... So science and research flourished and the world was a safe place. Even temporary flashpooints like Korea and Vietnam never led to nuclear war. Both sides knew it was a weapon they would never use.

Nowadays, matters are worse. Religious fanatics and terrorists not afraid to die are a lot more scary than communists.

Considering terrorists dont care even if they blow themselves up for their cause, very true they are more of a threat. What is even more scary is that these terrorist groups can get ahold of anything they want, it may take them awhile to aquire stuff, but they can get it. The worst part of it all is the stockpile of nuclear weapons, even tho the US and Russia destroyed a bunch of them, there still remains plenty to totaly wipe out the whole planet. That alone is scary enough!

Let's not forget the Cats did that back in '68...

BTW, RFBurns, did you see the German Centurion look-alike? I'd think it'd be of special interest to you. :)

.5c would put the object out of the solar system
one of the nazi scientists had proposed using electromagnets to propell shells at high velocity over the english channel.

i noticed that too. is chris roberts british?
he couldhave modeled the game after WW2 (kilrathi=nazi) i don't know about WC4 but if he had anything to do with prophesy that could be the falklands campaign.

Chris Roberts has repeatedly stated that his goal was to capture the feel of WWII with WC (saying things like: Waiting for a torpedo lock in a Broadsword with all turrets firing and flak going off everywhere is the closest You can get to a daylight run in a B-17"...

And so on... it has always been his intent to make WC a WWII simulator. i always thought though that the kilrathi are a facsimile of the Japanese army.

Transcript from InfoBurst4:

"We would go back to the basic roots of Wing Commander one, which was based on the War in the Pacific in World War II"

The Cold War was by no means fifty years of peace. It was just fifty years of low-level warfare, that nobody wanted to call warfare. Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, the Communist insurrections in South America and Africa, some of which are still going on, the rebellions in Eastern Europe that the Soviets put down by force... It was by no means peaceful, nor is it over.
