Stuff that Looks Like Things

Is it possible that the thing that wiped out dinosaurs could have done the same thing on Mars? Sure. Is it likely? No. We have proof dinosaurs existed. We've been digging up bones for years and years. THere is nothing to suggest that life actually existed on Mars beyond the microbe level without more proof. Pictures of things that look like things (made a reference there) at certain angles arent proof. Arent even a real lead to go spending billions of dollars finding out. Theres nothing to stop other countries from checking it out so why dont you guys do it? I can only allow my tax money to go so far. (actually i dont have a choice but thats moot right now)

We don't know enough about Earth, let alone Mars, to know what's really happened around our planets.

As for other countries heading to Mars, well, Russia's too busy running package tours around the ISS and just can't afford it now. China have only just managed to get something into space and back again, so they've still got some way to go before they actually manage to go anywhere. And us Europeans, well we can just about put satellites up but that's about it. The USA is the only nation capable of heading to Mars right now (or in the not too distant future anyway). Shame they're more interested Star Wars mark II.

Hopefully out of all this, the need to find out will become evident. After all, the US already spent billions on the Viking and Pathfinder probes. The Mars Global Surveyor is also another billion dollar project. There is a manned mission scheduled for 2018. Here is the question to ask, should they focus on useless rocks and hills that the Viking probe and Pathfinder probe has already studied, or land near Cydonia and find out once and for all if there was indeed a civilization or other on Mars?. If you had to pay the bill directly, what would you have them do? Look at rocks we already seen, or go to Cydonia and answer all these questions about artifacts and pyramids? If you choose rocks, you might as well just toss your checkbook into a fireplace and go to the roof and start sending smoke signals instead of picking up the phone. If you choose Cydonia, you made a wise choice! But I would bet 10:1 (in favor of oposition) that they will end up going to some stupid creator filled with useless rocks that wont tell us anymore about Mars than what we already know.

"Mission control, this is Capt. Fool on board the NASA spaceship Dumbutt, closing in on target, yep, its a rock!"

Too true, even if the Cydonia does turn out to be just a pile of rocks in an interesting shape, only interesting due to the human brain and it's tendancy to seek order in chaos. Or something like that...

Let's clarify that a little:

NASA spent billions on Viking, but Pathfinder was a little over $200 million. The Global Surveyor cost under $200 million, including the launch. NASA doesn't have anything planned past 2010, and don't even have the beginnings of manned mars flight plans.

And yes, they would focus on the rocks. After all, isn't the face a big rock? Even if it IS a face? The rocks are the things that will have the water underneath them, the things with the fossilized life, the things that will have the information on whether life has been there or not.

So, yeah, I want them to look at rocks. And the sky. That should cover the whole damn planet.

Is Cydonia "the face" of Mars, or is that something else?

The face is on a part of mars called Cydonia, so it's generally called the Cydonia face, or people often say Cydonia and everyone knows they mean the face.

Not many people don't know it's Cydonia, so for thirty years there hasn't been much need to differentiate.

Oh, now I feel stupid... :(

BTW: if there was an ancient civilization on Mars and we found out, who here would be very shocked about it, or even care at all?

how do you know, I just now replied :)

seriously though, I don't think I'd get too exited about it, I mean, okay, so we're not alone, it's not like I believed other-wise beforehand...

if anyone landed on mars they would have to land near a known source of water. that means one of the poles and IIRC one of them is only frozen carbon dioxide

RFBurns, NASA has taken photos of Cydonia and that so-called face at every opportunity. How many missions to Mars were there? Five? Six? You've got photos from three different missions, and you talk about NASA not wanting to explore Cydonia?
Even that CNN article linked to by TyeDyeBoy points out that NASA would dearly love to explore Cydonia - because it's a place with... very interesting rocks. Possibly it bordered with an ancient ocean. But an area filled with rocky mesas, I would imagine, does not make a very good landing site.

Oh, and proposing an international space station is a really, really great way of keeping others out of space, I would say.
Furthermore, there really isn't much NASA can do on its tiny budget. Why don't you look up the costs of the Apollo program? $260 billion for NASA is like you trying to make a living on $30 per week. You can do that - but you won't be going overseas any time soon... :)

All in all, if you want life on Mars, go play Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams. Trust me, you'll enjoy it... it's one of the best Ultima games around :).

wow, never heard of THAT Ultima, maybe it didn't get into the Americas because of that stupid "Democratic Iron Curtain" :)
