KS prices on ebay

I was just checking out the KS prices on ebay. It looks like their not as crazy as before. I remember 3 years ago buying all my WC games brand new includng KS just before the craze. I think I got my online for $40.00.

I was wondering what started this big demand for KS? WCP was the game that got me into PC gameing and which drove me to get all the WC games. WCIV DVD and P1 are my favorite games. My first game was Descent but I didn't care for it myself. I'm just not in to shooters.

The demand for KS shot up because after Prophecy and SO, the gap in games (no POL, P3 or WCVI) meant people wanted to replay the old games instead. They couldn't because they were DOS games. Or, mostly, they were less apt to waste time configuring ( have touble sleeing at night, the Privateer thing is on its way and I just know I'll spend the whole summer partitioning and setting up boot disks)

So KS was an excellent way to do so, and as they got bought up, the prices went up...

eBay would be a good place to start. WCIV DVD was only shipped with (and only works with) the Creative Labs Encore 2x-5x kits.

Yes. Do you have a DVD drive and a creative Dxr? It tends to dislike other decoders.

I believe the Dxr3 would work, if it wasn't for Creative's drivers. Hades says he was able to run WCIV DVD on a RealMagic Hollywood+ card. (these are the cards CL ships as Dxr3's, but with different drivers)

And a while ago on AGWC someone said they had it working on a couple of different first generation software decoders, IIRC...

I'll have a DVD drive and RealMagic board before long. I'll see if I can get my WCIV DVD to run somehow.

well if that's the case I guess I'll just pass. I mean, if I can't run it, why bother, the only "card" I know of concerning DVD is my Voodoo 3 3000 AGP card. It said something about DVD decoding in it. But I guess that won't work... :(

You can play the movie files on any system. It's the game that has problems with the decoders. We have an index at https://www.wcnews.com/articles/art26.shtml.

Like most 'newer' video cards, your Voodoo 3 does Motion Compensation. That should be enough to play DVD movies without additional hardware on a PII400 and up, perhaps.

The Dxr3 does all the movie processing (Motion Compensation and iDCT), so you can play DVD's on even a P120.

So depending on your processor, WCIV DVD might still be worth the cost. And second hand Encore 5X's go for $50 on eBay.

You don't need a CL Encore DVD player, its' the DXR3 card you need. You can get the from CL from $79.00. It will work with most DVD players. It's the Dxr card which lets you play DVD's. Granted if you can get a CL Encore 5x with the Dxr2 card for $50.00 that may be a better choice.

WCVI DVD uses MPEG3 and MCI extension to play. In theory if a video card support this it should work. I been thinking of getting a ATI Raedon 64MB DDR VIVO (or any of the Raedon series cards)video card so I could remove may Dxr3 card and free a slot. It's has a DVD decoder built in and it suppose to support MPEG3. I just haven't decided to buy it yet.

The game itself won't run properly on a Creative DXR3 card though because Creative's drivers suck. One driver set just has the game crash at the end of each scene, the other driver set cuts off the last 4 seconds of each scene.

The game does work with a RealMagic DXR3 though. Its almost exactly the same as the Creative DXR3 only it has better drivers.
