is it possible to beat WC4 if you never join up with the border worlders?

You can play a little longer with the Confederation but when they ask you for the second time to join the BW you have to agree. If you reject the offer the Lexington will explode and that´s it. "Your carrier was destroy".

Hmm... I still don't understand why some people would want to continue with Confed, what with the Black Lance and all. Do you really wish to help slaughter innocent civvies?
 
Hey, just try to place yourself in shoes of *common* confed pilot aboard Lex not, 'black lancer'. For exemple, Dagger - CO of Longbow squadron or Trubadur - thunderbolt pilot. You gave an oath to the Confederation and it's Your duty to obey orders. Yes, the things are grim and You forced to fight against humans. But it's Your duty. You need follow orders, not question them.
Of course, You can try accomplish Your orders with mimimal human losses, f. e.: use leech missiles or allow damaged fighters to break fight and flee home. (unfortunally you can't do this in game: you need to DESTROY all hostilities).
A lot of possibilities exists...

Really, but whats the fun if they cant shoot back? Might as well be taking down asteroids (at least they survive long enough to seriously scew you over).
