Great game, Great questions

howdy, just a few questions:
is the whole wc universe here? cuz Im not in Gemini anymore, think Im almost to Kilrah (no joke either). it seems that the kilrathi systems are ALOT bigger. from one minin base to a jump point is 541856933.74km away, the nav map get messed up (it puts everything into two or three piles on the map which make them unreadable), and Ive seen 3 New Constantinoples and about 11 Perry's so far! theres more confed ships than there are kilrathi ships which I find weird since Im deep in kilrathi space, and I can buy centurion and galaxys on kilrathi bases(man, I feel sorry for whoever ships them out there). would it be possible to buy kilrathi ships when your on kilrathi bases? cuz that would be sweet. maybe you can add some kilrathi items like those Kn'thrar leaves that are narcotics from what I hear, or some other kilrathi items.

Ive noticed in the relations page it lists a whole bunch of factions: confed, pirates, kilrathi, etc. but the nephilem? are there actually bug ships in this game? are there bug worlds that we can go to if we purchase/find a bug drive to go through their wormhole(which wont be contructed for another 12 years or so)?

great game so far, cant get used to combat though, my ship always goes to far in one direction so I have to compensate by movin the other way then I move to far in that direction so I move in the opposite direction and so on and so on which results in a see-saw effect, good for evadin but not when Im tryin to kill another ship :).

All the systems on the WCU map are in the game. However, only Gemini was hand made. The rest of the systems are there for balance purposes, and are automatically generated, so the scales are off, and nothing is where it should be. No earth in Sol, Perrys everywhere as you saw etc.

The player really isn't meant to leave Gemini, and the upcoming 1.0 version has all the jumps out of Gemini closed off: the remake is meant to focus on Gemini. Later on, the mod may expand to include more elements of the Wing Commander universe: the jumps will be opened, the other systems tweaked, Kilrah added etc.

All the factions are there for much the same reason. Time passes in this game, and once it expands beyond the original privateer, it is entirely possible the Nephilim will make an appearance later on, so they are in the faction relation chart. In the 1.0 version it is possible to hide factions so they don't show on the chart, the Nephilim will not show up then.

All the ships have inertia, linear and rotational. To keep from turning to far, center the stick (or counter turn) before you are pointed where you want to go. Anticipate instead of reacting after you are already turned too far :) It takes some getting used to.

Glad you enjoy it :)

ah ok, that makes sense then. yeah it does take gettin used to, but I think I just about have it right, turn the opposite way before I get to where I wanna go. a couple more questions though:

why are the talons so hard to kill compared to the original? the talon is supposed to be a flyin deathtrap, not a heavy fighter. and every fighter Ive encountered can turn on a dime, one second Im chasin him, the next Im turnin aroun to follow him as he afterburns behind me and shoots me up!

One more question, how do you pause the game inflight?

And press 'p' to pause. Or is that only in newer versions? In the version you have, it might be 'pipe' - the | key. That's shift-backslash :)

Final version is p though.

Pause in teh 9b Vanilla release is | (pipe) shift + backslash. On my new keyboard it's to the far right, above my enter key. On my old one it was to the right of my shift key. (Micro$lut ergo keyboard)

I really miss hitting e while centred on my target though. That is so ingrained from the original game that, even after hundreds of hours in the remake, I STILL hit it expecting to have my target change to what I'm looking at.

instead of y?
Hellcat, I played Privateer for YEARS. Not weeks months or days. YEARS. When was it released? 93? ANd my version came with my first SoundBlaster card; a SoundBlaster PRO with 2x proprietary SCSI CD ROM Drive. YEARS. I still have the original machine as well as the game and I play the game on that machine when I feel like re-routing cables!

e is ingrained, y is not. I have to work at remembering what it is. I'm getting there, believe me. But I STILL hit e to switch targets and then look at my fingers to see what I did wrong! And my version never did have a working t to rotate through targets. e grabbed the focused target, and if I hit it repeatedly it shuffled through them. Like I said, my version seems to be different from everyone elses because it was packaged with my sound card.

hmm ok, so p or | pause the game. now I got a couple other questions:
Ive heard much of a cloakin device but havent found one yet. how much is one, where can I find one, and can I put one in my Galaxy?

another question, I got my ship blown from under me in New Detroit doin a couple bounty missions (worth over 300 000 all together :D ) and all my upgrades appeared in cargo boxes all around the system, now Im wonderin if I buy a tractor beam hooked up to my missle hardpoint, can I scoop them up and re-attach them to my new galaxy?

not any more...we removed that feature when people would kill ships and just tractor the upgrades in for mondo cash...

you can tractor 'em in and sell 'em for 200 credits as space salvage

Cloaking is, as you would expect, a military device and only available from your local military base. Perry
I'm not sure at what point it becomes available. I used several saved games from previous versions, I BELIEVE 9b has it available almost as soon as you reach New Detroit. While it does come in handy, I believe it is more a cheat than anything else. It's like a golden parachute. You can get away from almost any fight using it. You can cruise -- almost with impunity -- through asteroid fields. While handy, it is definitely something I almost never use anymore. It takes away from the challenge of the game.

In a word. . .no.

It was explained to me that it was too easy for you to tractor in debris from a destroyed capital ship and hotrod your craft with too little struggle, so that feature was removed. If you tractor your gear in you get 10cr. a box.

A tractor beam is invaluable.

You know how much work went into getting your fighter / freighter outfitted, and some kilrathi/retro fighter jock decided to ding you up, and you managed to shoot him down. Now you can tractor him in and sell him into slavery for 600 to 700 cr. Not very much considering how much armour costs, but the knowledge that he's gonna suffer for costing you can be somewhat vindicating. Not to mention those lucrative rescue missions.

hmm, thats shitty, I had some good stuff too! tachyon guns, expensive radar, lv3 ECM, big shields...

Yes and no. Imagine you come up on a gaggle of kilrathi tearing up a Paradigm When the Paradigm blows, if you're quick, you can get some really hot upgrades. Imagine now that the confed fighters that were escorting that Paradigm took out those Kilrathi, now you have THEIR quality gear, AND teh Paradigm's gear and all no risk to you Definitely not fair. A 1/2 off cost for a refit wouldn't be unfair though, but how do you implement THAT?

yeah, thats true, maybe you can put in somethin that labels the upgrade as yours if(in my case) your ship blows up and your stuff gets scattered across the system. but anyways, a couple more questions (they just keep comin eh):

I want a bigger reactor but I cant cuz its in red. I have enough credits and hopefully enough room (stock centurion) so whats the matter? Im tryin to get a reactor level 5 or reactor level 9.

and also how do I switch my ships? I got a galaxy at new constantinople and Im at new detroit, but I think Im gonna buy an orion at perry or somewhere hopefully.

In the My Fleet section at the ship dealer's. Instead of Confed Hunter or Merchant.

Select the ship you want and click BUY and a pilot will be hired with the 6000 credits you pay to ferry your ship to you.

hey, havent been able to play for awhile cuz Ive been studyin for a big exam that decides whether I get my private pilots license or not, but I got another question: why cant I buy a level 8 shield emitter for my orion? I got enough credits, sold my old shield emitter and hopefully enough space so whats the prob?
