Game (now) will run

I downloaded the game yesterday. From what I saw installed correctly. But when I try to start the game it closes.

I am running under Windows98
No problem running Vegastrike with the latest CVS build

When I try to run the exe it gives me some Kernell32 error. I could post it but it is in german.

Ist doch egal ;) Würde wohl helfen.

Es mag eine Weile daurn bis wir eine Lösung finden, da ich bald schlafen geh', aber wir kriegen's schon hin.

Trans.: post it anyway ;)

Hi Zel,

schick uns rüber was zu hast, deine Systemspezifikationen wären vielleicht auch noch interessant.
Vegastrike läuft problemlos?*

*german

Yes VS runs. At least the CVS versions. With the release version I had the shipbuying crash bug.

My specs:
Athlon 1Ghz
Win 98
Hercules 3D Prophet II MX
256 MB

Guess thats all I have at the moment

it dies right when it tries to contact your sound driver

try turning sound off and music off in the setup.
if that doesn't work we'll look some more.

of course if it works without sound we'll look into that too... perhaps we didn't include teh right openAL.dll dll's in the bin directory

same error logs? Wait it can't possibly have the same error logs-- cus now sound won't try to load and it won't complain about mp3's not supported.. ( it doesn't use the mp3 support anyway)

paste your new error logs please :)

another thing...make sure the resolution and depth 16 bit or 24 bit in setup match your screen's color and depth

Here they are

Turned off sound and music and tried every graphics setting combination.

Follwing results:

ok...now it gets tough

copy the vegastrike.config from the normal vegastrike game (see if that works) (at least loads...)

then if not, restore the old one...and copy the dll's one by one over from the working directory to the nonworking one.

then if that doesn't help copy vegastrike.exe over...

let us know---basically we'll transform it bit, by bit into a working point...then backoff as much as we can... to identify where it changes

too bad it works on all developer's computers or we could track this down in a jiffy

Not sure what kind of software you have on your computer...but there's a chance you have a corrupt libz*.dll or libpng*.dll on your computer---
when I had one that caused the silly kernel32 error similar to yours

now I was under the impression that windows loaded dll's from the current directory *before* other directories--but I was wrong when I tried running gaim the other day...

one thing you could try is setting your $PATH environment variable to only the bare bones c:\windows;c:\windows\system;c:\windows\system32
maybe try running vega strike from a dos prompt (in windows) and type
cd c:\progra~1\privateer\data\bin (or wherever you put it)
set PATH=c:\progra~1\privateer\data\bin
vegastrike.exe

try that too

Whoa now it gets strange. I got it to work by copying the dlls.
The last dlls I copied before it worked were

SDL.dll
SDL_mixer.dll
SDL_ncbm.dll
msvcr71.dll

I hadnt had problems with all the other dlls though those were not possible to copy because they were still used. So I rebooted and copied them over to the privateer bin. After that it suddenly worked (With sound). So I tell myself hey I should try to find out which one it was copying back the old dlls and doing it all over again one by one.
On copying the last dll I think ok that one has to be it but boom it still didnt run. So I am back at the start again.

I repeated like I did before but nothing would work. used the other config file and the new vegastrike.exe

Yay glad it worked....

if you would do me a favor and install it into a new directory...
then move one of the dll's until you figure out exactly which one caused it
we'll figure this out

but first--enjoy playing...glad you worked so hard to get it up and workin

PS: I don't think SDL_ncbm.dll or SDL_mixer.dll are used in the *main* VS program (only in the music server) so it's either SDL.dll or msvcp71.dll
if you could narrow it down to 1 we would be much obliged.

Remember: Go visit sandoval in New Detroit

another point: Please right click on SDL.dll and go to the version tab
paste the info there for my help (both on working and failed SDL.dll).

And make sure you're using the vanilla privateer vegastrike.config file or your energy and recharge rates will be wack --though I think you said you were doing that

Dont ask me how or why. I again copied the above dlls and the dlls starting with a lib*.
Now it works again. I leave it like it is now as I fear I will only fuck it up again if I want to figure out what I did.

fair enough :)
glad you got it working

let us know if it gives you any static (other than static from your damaged ship being shot up by pirates ARRR)
