excuse me, but

There's another thread about it in the offtopic zone.

In the futere, if you don't make an effort to make sensible posts you will be held accountable.

It means that the gaming public is being played like a two dollar violin. :) This is EA's planned campaign to sell things like Red Alert 3 -- not some amazing admission of guilt. It's absolutely stunning that everyone sees vast conspiracies where there are none (EA BOUGHT THE FOOTBALL LICENSE AGAIN? THEY MUST BE PLANNING TO DESTROY NEPTUNE!) but is absolutely duped by something as cheap as this into doing exactly what the PR people want in the first place (repeating this story.)

Does the internet actually think that a major industry keynote is some accidental off the cuff thing that some maverick hero reporter happened to overhear for us? Wow, stop the presses, I just snuck into Macworld and can reveal the amazing truth: Steve Jobs would like you to buy an iPhone! Repeat it as often as possible, it's hard core!

I agree with you Loaf. When I heard this, I saw right through this PR rubbish. There is no way they will actually not stifle the creativity of developers. There have to be deadlines and limited budgets and intrusion into the "corporate culture" or whatever.

That's not the point either. That's almost the other end of the spectrum - the conspiracy ideas that LOAF pointed out. The specific things said in that address were said for a reason, and a lot of people seem to be making up their own tangential conclusions instead of really thinking about what was said and why.

Yes, at the end of the day this is *probably* good news -- it's a new marketing campaign to sell games like Red Alert... and the fact that Origin was mentioned gives me hope that Wing Commander X is another portion of the same plan.

(Speaking of which, can you believe there are three AAA Command and Conquer games announced in development? C&C3 didn't exactly set any sales records... what we need is for EA to get that same 'spark' for Wing Commander.)

Though apparently one of the CEOs of EALA was one of the co-founders of westwood so I've learned... But yes. Exactly! It's definitely the kind of attention we would like to see WC get.

Yeah, that's pretty awesome crazy. It's no surprise that a Red Alert 3 is coming, but the fact that it's announced and openly in development before Kane's Wrath or Tiberium are wrapped is amazing.

I truly hope EA doesn't use Arena as a major part of their decision making with regards to a new WC. While WC PC games have often required new or upgraded computers, I can at least justify that cost with regards to utility in a way I couldn't with a 360. Had the 360 included an HD-DVD player at the time, however... That may have given the format the boost it needed to kill BluRay, THEN I may have been able to sneak it in.

Ah, the "What-ifs..."

I'm not sure what Arena has to do with this. For most game types, the XBox 360 is a bigger gaming platform than the PC and PS3 combined right now. It will be (and is) the lead platform for most major video games being made today, both from EA and other major companies.

While WC PC games have often required new or upgraded computers, I can at least justify that cost with regards to utility in a way I couldn't with a 360.

A well-equipped XBox 360 costs $350. You can't take a computer that performs regular business tasks and upgrade it to play cutting edge games for less than $350. It's more cost effective and easier to justify a 360 purchase than a PC upgrade.

Yeah, I am a long time PC gamer, and I can tell you on my 360 that I appreciate so damned much not having to update directx or download the latest Nvidea chipset driver to make a game play. It just does.

The missed connection, I think, was my questioning if Arena's popularity would have input onto a go/no go for a future Wing Commander.

A 360 at $350 is not "well-equipped." It is not capable of outputting an HD DVD format of any kind without further purchase. It may have a WiFi upgrade at that point, if that's what the extra $50 references.

Regardless, a 360 is a gaming platform and a growing media center. I can justify spending $400 to upgrade a computer to new standards, as it is still capable of being a functional tool. That it isn't any better than a 360 for gaming is irrelevant to me.

I can't stand fanboys, regardless of the subject: 360, PS3, Wii, Apple, PC, etc. These things aren't absolutes. I even hint at it in my post: I wish 360 had helped win the HD optical war, as it is more appealing to me for a number of reasons, and that feature would have helped me justify the overall cost.

"Well equipped" wasn't just fancy language on my part. The $350 XBox includes the hard drive, headset, component cables and so on that the $280 XBox lacks. It is well equipped to do the things you buy an XBox for.

It is not capable of outputting an HD DVD format of any kind without further purchase.

The XBox 360 actually has quite an extensive digital HD library right out of the box. For a few dollars each, you can download high definition versions of hundreds of movies to play off the machine. But I don't see that really being a factor here. You can easily spend twice the cost of an XBox turning a vanilla computer into a gaming machine and not have HDDVD/Blu-ray playback on it there either.

It's cheaper to buy both an XBox and a plain office/internet/graphics/work computer than it is to buy just a computer with the processor/ram/video card capable of running modern games. And I didn't throw away my computer when I bought an XBox.

Of course the more features any given thing has, the easier it is for a person to justify the cost. But for someone entering the picture who doesn't have a gaming computer or an XBox, the XBox will get you more for less. And Blu-ray players will be as cheap as plain DVD players within a couple years here. They'll be everywhere and every home with regular DVD players today will have several in a few years, so the games should probably be the biggest factor.

Not only movies but TV shows and tons of other content and it's updated very regularly. I've actually built up quite a library of videos on my HDD.
