Confed Marines & Their Battles

Banjo

Rear Admiral
Hi there, everyone!

I haven't long discovered CIC; never knew there were so many 'Wing Commander' fans out there!

Actually, since you all seem to know much more about the WC universe (I've played all the games, but never been able to find the books and other merchandise) I thought this might be a good place to ask for help.

I'm looking for any information people have on the ground soldiers of 'Wing Commander'; ie. Confed troops/marines, their Kilrathi counterparts and their equipment/weaponry.

The reason is, I've been working on a tactical game (sort of 'Vandal Hearts' meets 'Starship Troopers') set in the 'Wing Commander' universe, but I want to make it as authentic to plot and technology as possible. Unlike seemingly most others who've tried to make these so-called 'fan games' I've got no problems with programming, art, sound, etc. but I really wanted some background on WC ground combat (troops, equipment, famous battles) to help create a detailed story WC fans might be interested in.

I'd very much appreciate any 'Marine history lesson' or other weapons/equipment/unit organisation/tactics stuff you hard-core WC scholars can provide!

Cheers,
Banjo

Welcome to the fold.
well, WC games/books don't talk alot about the marines (the majority being in End Run and Fleet Action), but i'll give what i know (though LOAF will probably correct most everything i put)

they use energy weapons like lasers and neutron guns and also projectile weapons like RPGs, Flechette guns, and mass drivers depending on the tactical situation

uniforms are chameleon-like

unit organization is kinda like the current Marine Corps organization (listed below)
Corps
Division
Brigade (aka regiment)
Battalion (the special forces are called Raider Battalions)
Company
Platoon
Squad

Famous Battles

Repleetah
-11 year battle that the cats win. 'nuff said

Vukar Tag
-battle which destroyed Emperor's mother's home, designed to draw kilrathi home fleet into ambush. cat marines land on Vukar and get beat. Marines commanded by "Big Duke" Greko (End Run)

Raid on Kilrah
-Marine Raiders destroy 6 carriers under construction on the moon of Kilrah as well as other targets (End Run)

Battle for Terra
-Marines land on Hakaga supercarriers and plant anti-matter mines, destroying 3 of the 5 carriers. "Big Duke" Greko, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, dies in this attempt (Fleet Action)

Tactics
kick down the door and kill anything that moves

according to the book Fleet Action, there is a Confed Army, but that is all that is known

I don't think the cats won Repleetah, actually. According the VS, the final Marine action lead by Lieutenant Miles D'Darby ends with no survivours on either side.

Best, Raptor

Yes, Repleetah had no winner... a stupid bloodshed you'll be able to discover soon (I hope) through "Repleetah: Chronicles", a story I'm writing ;)

If you go by user IDs, we're already over that mark.

Maybe we are 2000 members ,but how many are they "active".....
you know what I mean my friend?? :(

Whether or not they're active is irrelevant. A Wing Commander fan is a Wing Commander fan. The fact that they don't talk here changes nothing.

Thanks, everyone!

How can someone FORGET 'Wing Commander'? Perish the thought!

Seriously, thanks for all the fast responses, folks; I REALLY appreciate it! Looks like there's not just quite a few WC fans out there, but some friendly and helpful ones too!

Well, I guess I picked a subject that there's not much info on, eh? That's ok; I just don't like the idea of making stuff up and it either being downright wrong, or against what most fans believe SHOULD be right.

Given the info I have so far, then, I'm going to assume laser pistols and rifles as main weapons with neutron rifles, flechette launchers, RPGs and mass drivers (sniper rifles?) as specialist weapons. Any ideas on armor and other equipment? What about the Kilrathi?

As for unit organisation, my only real concern at this point is how many marines in a squad, and how many squads in a platoon.

In the meantime, I'm going to try and watch as much of WCA as I can (given my lousy connection, that may take awhile). Episode 3, was it?

Oh, and the 'Reavers' are all Scandinavian, right?

Thanks again!

Cheers,
Banjo

P.S. I'm looking forward to reading your 'Repleetah: Chronicles' fic, NoRemorse!

as for armor, i don't have a clue. There is the stuff in WC4, but in the novels there are also fully sealed suits for space combat, pressure suits, radiation suits, and probably a couple more. if your story doesn't deal with a exotic environment, i'd say base the armor off what Dekker and his people use in WC4. the kilrathi use pretty much the same kind of weapons, but i have know knowledge on cat armor, units, equipment.

for the squad and platoon size, usually it is 10 - 12 in a squad (lead by a Sergeant or Staff Sergeant), with 3 - 4 squads in a platoon (lead by a 2nd lieutenant and Platoon Sergeant [rank of Gunnery Sergeant]) course these are the current Marine Corps stats but they should be pretty close to WC

the academy episode that has Repleetah in it is #4 and i think that the Reavers ARE all Scandinavian (but i'm not sure)

oh, i think the mass driver is just another kind of gun, not a sniper rifle
