An idea which I think will be unpopular

This idea popped into my head while I've been on break playing my Wing Commander games. Essentially, my idea is that when Origin does decide to resume making WC games, if they do decide to, they should start over. In my opinion, the true story of Wing Commander was about the struggle between the Humans and the Kilrathi. WC 4 is included in that. My problem with WCP, although I immensely enjoy the game, is that the Bugs are too much like the Cats. Too much an entirely predatory (in the Bugs case I'd guess parasitic) society.
Which brings me to my true point. I think Origin should start the series over. Christopher Blair's story was Roberts story, one that he crafted beautifully. And really, its over now. IMHO, the universe they created was fun while the Kilrathi were there. The problem was they created an enemy that had to be utterly destroyed. Now, the details.
What this needs is a new character, a new type of galaxy he is roaming in, and particularly I have envisioned a new type of alien. An alien that carries an uncanny resemblance to humans, both physically and mentally. Recently, astronomers have discovered that a much larger series of events in a solar system play a part in whether there could be life there or not. The current theory is that for carbon based life to exist, a solar system most likely must be very much like ours. Two points I remember are position in the outer area of the galaxy and an outer planet like Jupiter with a huge gravitational pull to act as a 'vacuum' for asteroids, meteors, etc.
I'm not saying these aliens look exactly like us, just a lot like us. But their traits are more important. Their first instinct is diplomacy as well. However, both societies have the Manifest Destiny mentality, which causes the problems in the end. If someone wants me to write up a beginning of a plot to this or something, I could try to. Or you can bash it. Whichever you choose.

....yeah.. but....

...don't you think that this wouldn't work with Wing Commander?

Christopher Blair is dead... or he just seems to be, and to send him every new year into a new Galaxy would be some kind of boring... that'S the same as STAR TREK, and I HATE STAR TREK!!!!

"The Same Procedure as Every Year!"

Well, the WC-Series is a Star between all those sucking WannaBe's in the GameWorld...

But you can't continue like that... they have to find another solution for that, and in fact, I have no little point in mind how....

Blair, Kerensky, Skywalker... do you really want more?

This is about SHOOTING people down, not talking with then.
A good idea is going back to the Kilrathi war, and see it from the cats prospective or as a newbie in some other carrier, the only bad thing about this would be the ships, since we would be flying and fighting the same ships from WC I to WC III,but with a new engine things would look a lot diferent in the game. And they could also fill up the gaps that sill are in the storyline.

I would say that I would love to fly as a Kilrathi, or maybe as a member of the Borderworlds during war or even better, fly during those 10 years that Blair was flying a desk. That way they can fill in a huge block of time and still not ruin the pre-existing universe. Also during that time we could be introduced to pilots who are veterans in WCIII and WIV but are new to us then, like panther and hawk (or would they be too young then) during that time we could also fly with blair's old compatriots from the claw since we dont know what happens to them then.

I'm not sure I was clear enough as to what I meant. I meant scrap the entire universe. Say, "Wow, that was a nice little universe we created and it lasted a good 9 years or so. No it's time to start over. From scratch."

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't want to insult you, but that idea is stupid. Think about it, we practicly know NOTHING about the Nephilim, just like we didn't know anything about the Kilrathi after the first game. If OSI should ressume the WC series they should concentrate on developing the Nephilim, just like they did with Kilrathi in the second and third games in the series, as well as the add-ons and novels.

Chris and Erin Roberts did essentially create a totally new universe with StarLancer. I am rather fond of the game though it could use a little better character interaction like Wing Commander.

This new type of universe you speak of would definitely provide something fresh and unique to Origin, but if they will not market or develope Wing Commander, their best and finest game, how will they start from scratch when games like StarLancer and Freespace II are not doing so well selling.

What we need is not only a totally new intruiging universe, but also a new unique style of gameplay or flight physics. I think Chris Roberts had this in mind with FreeLance and hopefully it will be everything he has promised.

Personally a game that has flight physics like Babylon 5 i.e. real space flight, huge numbers of fighters at any given time, and of couse graphics that would make you blink twice to check for reality, would be something that would surely revolutionize and re-vitalize the genre.

Any other Ideas?

Personally instead of a Babylon 5 game I want my Wing COmmander. I don't care if its the re-released kilrathi saga or WC6 or Privateer III or even WCAcadamy 2, I WANT MY WING COMMANDER BACK NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd have to agree that any WC game would be a welcome addition to the WC world, but in order for Origin to take the bait and bring back Wing Commander it would have to be as popular and as revolutionary as WC3. It would have to appeal not to just harcorps Wing Nuts, but to the entire gaming community.
The question I have is what kind of new game aspect would be able to do just that?

Personaly, If Origin does decide to bring back WC it better be good, I mean really good. Not just to please us for waiting so long, but to impress everyone else of just how cool WC really is.

So I guess my question is what new ideas in space sim gaming could bring back the entire genre? For WC3 it was FMV, for the next Wing Commander game...what could it be?

A good thing in the WC universe was the story, if that goes so does the game, also moving around the ship(especialy in WC IV) was a nice thing, I hate the Going-to-the-brifing-room-chose-figher-and-armarment-fly-kill-mission-acomplished-return-to-base-and-going-to-the-brifing-room-and-start-the-same-thing-all-over-again.Moving around the ship, going to the bridge, the hangar, the WC(funny I never see a WC in a starship or base), talk to people, see things working very rewarding, is that things that make the WC great and diferent of the other games.

I would have to agree that developing the Nephilim storyline would be an excellent way of bringing back WC. But if OSI or EA does nothing, I think that the key lies in both Chris and Erin Roberts pooling some resources, along with the abundant talent of all these mod makers and ship conversions out here in WC editing community, that something could be done. Maybe Im off track here, but if some of the recent attempts of other games to keep WC alive, but not exactly giving the WC feel or spirit, perhaps a meeting needs to be scheduled or irc chat or something. Maybe all that has taken place already I dont know. I just think the polls show whats happening to the WC world, and a new WC game does not appear to be happening. Till then, time to load up WC IV! :D

Long live WC!

Here Here Burns. BTW WCIV was the best WC game in all repects, the FMV was great, as was the story and the gameplay too. I playit as often as I can.

Thank you for clarifying my point better. Starlancer could have been on par with WC3, had they only made a more developed plot. See, the thing is these games are stagnant right now. Essentially, WC3-P, Freespace, and Starlancer are the same game to actually play. The plots are different, the flight engines change, but essentially they are the same. They need to revolutionize it once again. I haven't exactly figured it out yet, but I have one really basic flaw, most exemplified in WC3. That CAP Ships are so easy to take down. Made worse in WC3 that the most difficult CAP Ship to destroy is the Corvette. If you have no torpedoes, you take a beating from its guns. In a new universe, CAP ships must be treated like what they are. Which they were in P2. A run on a cap ship was one of the most difficult things in that game. You get hit by a cruisers or a carriers turrets a couple of times and you get turned into space debris. This would require fleet actions to be much more important. To take down a carrier, you have to escort not just a bomber, but a cruiser, or a destroyer into battle, and the enemy will sure as hell try to blast the tar out of it just as much as your trying to blast the tar out of the enemy.

Perhaps you haven't played WCP or SO becuase they made taking out capships impossible if one doesn't have a Torp or is in a Devastator. That handled alot of what you were saying but I personally find that the best approach would be that a fighter can attack a cap ship, but the cap ships armor/shields can take a lot of firepower and make its weaponsmore accurate and powerful.

Perhaps then a new WC engine would need the ability to not only be able to fly fighters, but engage in combat and control larger ships as well.

Another thing they could do is add some strategy element in the game. Back in WC3-4 Blair was Wing Commander, and he gave the orders, assigned waypoints, and put fighter resources where they need to go. This was all done in FMV, but what if that was all part of the game. The abililty to plan out your mission before you attempt it like in Rainbow Six would be a welcome addition to gameplay. Plus what you decide and do would affect the outcome much more than blowing up Kilrathi at preset missions and navpoints. Also if you could divert fighter resources in-mission by using an interactive commander's Nav screen or something to that effect, plus still be able to blast the bad guys in your own fighter that would be something that might be something that the genre needs.

Any other ideas or comments?

To tell the true I was expecting that in WC P(not however working with several fights, that would too hard), since that see a logical advancement in the game, but we got back to WC I and II, only in one our two missions we could chose the mission. A mission generator were we could chose what mission we wanted to fly (like in destroying a ship, either as fighter cover or flying the Bomber) but I like script mission too, random missions are fun but I dont want a game that is too random, that kills the story line.A good idea is if we take by luck or skill a Carrier in the game and are still a cruiser there, the cruiser sould have a lot less fighter cover, make the missions being more easy or harder in light of the ships that we take down is a good start.
And in WC II capships were dificult to destroy I got nail by that Heavy Destroyer far too many times.

I prefer the WCIV way of mission choosing vs the WCI/II was of doing it becuase I like to be able to choose my wingman/men/woman/women as well as my fighter or at least the missile loadout on that fighter, like for me, I prefer to go up with imrecs and only imrecs, though in SO the Mosquito pods were usefull.

As it was said before, in WCP we couldn't choose our fighters and ad wignman because we wer playing Casey. Casey started as a Second Lieuteneant. Lieutenants never get to choose there stuff.

And in WCP, there were a special couple missions where we did get to choose our fighters..
