"X-type"? "R-Type"?...Huh?

Basically, what IS X-type and R-Type?... These terms are used to describe some mod that has pics up on the main CIC page today, and I'm confused.

Someone plz clarify.

R-Type is an oldschool side-scrolling shooter from the 80's, I think it originated for the Nintendo but I could be mistaken on my video game history.

I believe R-Type was originally an arcade game (standup console dealy)... and then it was originally ported to the Commodore 64 and the original Sega Master System.
