Wing Commander Replay Week 3

Dundradal

Frog Blast the Vent Core!
Alright guys, this week is for finishing up WC1. I've still got Venice to do personally and I know others still have some missions to do. If you're done WC1 already, now is the time to explore the losing paths. Take some time to go through Port Hedland, Rostov, Hell's Kitchen, etc. As much as everyone hates losing, WC1 has a great branching system and we all should check it out.

I'll post my Venice replay later today. Good luck and Good hunting.

The heart of the Kilrathi operations in Vega Sector, Venice, this is where it gets interesting. Kats don’t like water, shocker. Shotglass says that the Kilrathi HQ is an orbital station and if we take it out we can push them back! Hunter’s on my wing for the foreseeable future so I’m pumped up and ready to go. Paladin with some more info on an Ace seen in system (foreshadowing of his covert activities  ) Khajja the Fang. Sounds good to me.

Venice 1

A four point patrol. We’re deep in Kilrathi-held territory so I expect heavy contact in this mission. After launch nav 1 is a flyby of an Exeter. It’s sitting on the edge of an asteroid field. This mission definitely has plenty of obstacles.

Nav 2 is where it starts to get interesting. I’ve got 2 Jalthi on the edge of a minefield. I let Hunter loose and make my way into the fight. Being this close to a minefield can present some problems, however I like to skirt the edge of hit and hope that I can make a Jalthi fly into a mine or two. This time though it doesn’t seem like I’m going to need it. I get right behind the Jalthi and start unloading with guns. I’m saving my missiles at this point. It breaks apart after a few more shots. Hunter has done a number on the other Jalthi, I’m guessing he hit it with a missile because my fight took maybe 20 seconds. I unload with my guns and after another 15-20 seconds it breaks apart. I hit the nav point then auto over to nav 3.

Damn those Kats! Do I really need to go through both an asteroid and mine field? I take my time and reduce speed to 120 KPS. I’m not taking any chances this close to the final goal. It does take a little bit to make it through the fields but I’m ready for what’s coming next…

Nav 4 is quite the sight. Khajja is here in a god damn Krant! I’m going right for him. I let Hunter loose. I trust him to have my back. There’s also a Ralari close by. I head at Khajja head on and let loose with guns. I take some shield damage but he got the worst of it. He ABs a way a bit then tries to come at me again. I’m not going to play chicken with him so I try to slip onto his tail. It takes a bit of flying to final get into position but once I’m there I’m going to stick like glue. I empty my energy pool although a few shots fly wide. I wait for it to recharge to about half way then let loose again. It looks like he’s going to break up soon. I wait for a recharge then release the killing strike. Burn in hell furball.

While I was fighting Khajja Hunter managed to destroy one of the Krants. Good only two left. As it plays out each of us manage to down one of the remaining Krants, but then a wave of 4 Gratha show up. I head after the Ralari and unleash with missiles and guns. On the third pass the Ralari goes up. Hunter has nailed one of the Grathas. I want these last three. I use my last DF on the first Gratha along with some guns and it goes up with no problems. I turn to engage the next target when I run into a missile fired by one of the other Gratha. Shields and armor are gone on the front section. Ejection, communications, acceleration absorbers are all damaged. Things just got a whole lot more interesting. I have to play it safe now. Even more than I was before. I head after a Gratha and let loose with guns. After 20 seconds or so I manage to take him down. There’s only one Gratha left and it looks like he’s being getting the better of Hunter. I jump in behind the Gratha and start unloading. Oh how I love to shoot down Gratha. It goes up and we head back to the Claw.

I get a Silver Star for my actions. It definitely feels well deserved. The techs are going to have their hands full fixing my Rapier for the next mission.

This system sounds like it’s crawling with Kat Aces. Good, I like taking out the best they have to offer. Bossman lets me know there will be a Fralthi coming up soon. I love to take out those big bastards. The most satisfying thing for me in WC is to destroy a big capship. We have so many more to kill in the coming months too :D I prefer Bossman’s tactic of attacking from the rear. Although on some ships it is advantageous to attack from the side.

Venice 2

Alright time to take on the aforementioned Fralthi. I also get some backup from 2 Rapiers off the Kyoto. This really makes it seem like this is a large operation by Confed. Even though we don’t see the Kyoto seeing its fighters really adds to the atmosphere.

After we meet up with the other Rapiers we head to nav 1. Gratha in asteroids. This should be interesting. I let Hunter loose and get to work. I’ve got the speed set at 150 KPS. I use the AB intermittently to get into firing position on the Gratha. 4 Rapiers make quick work of the first wave. The second wave takes a bit longer but I manage to come through without having rammed an asteroid and that’s always a good thing.

At the Fralthi nav there’s 4 Salthi flying close escort. 4 Rapiers on 4 Salthi is a quick fight. The second wave of Krants takes a bit longer. One manages to do a good amount of damage to my rear armor, but I’m still in good shape to take on the Fralthi. I let loose with all my DF and IFF missiles. Along with the combined guns of 4 Rapiers the Fralthi has no chance. That’s one cruiser that won’t harass the Confederation any longer!

Halycon informs me that the Fralthi was in direct contact with the Venice starbase. Now we’ve got a fix on its location and can force the kats out of Vega.

The Kilrathi are retreating everywhere in Vega. This is it. We are moving in for the kill. Let’s get down to business. Hunter recommends the trick I already mentioned. When it works it can really help you out in a tough situation. Here’s hoping I don’t need to use it.

Venice 3

The Claw is moving into position and I’ve got to cover the starboard flank. Nav 1 is just a mine field. Nav 2 has a mine field and 2 Jalthi. I take the first one out with no problems and the second follows not to long afterwards. I’m lucky I didn’t ram a mine since I was flying around not paying too much attention. Can’t let that happen again.

Nav 3 has 2 Dralthi and a Ralari. A Dralthi is no problem in a Rapier. I rip through the two of them in no time and straight unloading on the Ralari. Hunter manages the killing blow. The Kats are losing big ships in this system left and right. This will teach them to fear the Tiger’s Claw when it comes insystem!

However back at the Claw 4 Gratha are trying to take her out. Hunter and I jump into the fight with a vengeance. Attack my carrier will you! One Gratha goes up with a DF and some gun bursts. I ram the next one and use guns to finish it off. Hunter manages to take another out. We both jump the last one. It doesn’t last long under our attacks. Not today furballs, not today.

The Bronze Star for this mission is definitely well deserved. The kats threw a lot at me and I slapped them right back. Now it’s time for the final hop.

Everybody’s saying the same thing. This is it. The biggest fight of my short career. Let’s do it.

Venice 4

Destroy the starbase. With it gone the Kilrathi will be out of Vega. Let’s give the Confederation another victory!

Nav 1 has a minefield along with 4 Krants and Fralthi. What a nice welcoming committee. I give Hunter the order and wade in. It’s a tough fight but I down one krant on the first pass and then get another when I turn right onto its tail. The other two go down with some more effort and Hunter and I head at the Fralthi. I know I need to save my missiles for the starbase so it takes a while to take down the Fralthi. Once it goes up we head for the real target.
Nav 2 has the starbase and 4 Gratha to start. I know I need to nail these bastards as fast as possible so I use a combo of ramming and guns to take them down quickly. The 2nd wave of Salthi I just use guns and they go down without so much as a scratch to myself. My armor is a little banged up from the ramming but I think I’ll manage. The 4 Jalthi present a bit of a problem. One my first attack I take some damage and lose a neutron gun and a laser. With only half my guns I have to be careful. This is not the mission to die on. It takes a while to take out the Jalthi but in the end it’s done. Now it’s time to nail that starbase. With only 2 guns this is going to take a while so I keep making passes to take down the shields and start to do some hull damage. Once they were down I started to let loose with all my missiles. With a few more passes the starbase breaks up! Another victory for the mighty Confederation! Haha!

We head back to the Claw for the celebrations! After the debriefing I’m awarded the Medal of Valor. Oh it feels so good and well deserved. I watch the final splash screen and smile as the Claw comes into view. Wing Commander is still such a great game, perhaps still the best of the series for its branching campaign and simple but effective story.

I look forward to continue the battle next week in Secret Missions 1. Watch Sunday for the new thread, “Secret Missions 1 Replay Week 1”

Good work guys.

I just wanted to post a notification that I just completed all missions of the WC1 campaign. That includes both the winning and losing paths, so let me know if there is any preference for when I set aside the time to journal.

Hey Dundradal,
I'm playing through WC1 now that GOG.com has made it compatible with Win7, and I can't seem to get the Terran Medal of Valor after beating this mission. I've defeated everything except the Jalthi, which I just leave behind after destroying the starbase (difficult to fight them all using a mouse instead of a joystick). Do I have to destroy them, or do something else specific to earn the medal?

I bet it's the Jalthi. Each ship type earns you a certain number of 'medal points' in a given mission... and you have to get a certain number to get the medal. IIRC, you have to kill just about everything to reach that threshold in the last one.

Oh, I see. Could you possibly link me to the article that explains the medal points (how many are required for bronze, silver, gold)? I've been trying to search for 20 minutes with no success. Thanks.

There isn't an online document that explains it, although eventually we will add the information to WCPedia.

The Mark Minasi guide for the game lists the point values.

I just found this today with a google search: http://www.the-spoiler.com/ACTION/Origin/wing.commander.1.html

"Strike mission: take out the Starbase. You can get a Pewter Planet for 243 pts, but you can’t keep it, even though you had to kill just about everything personally to get it. The game ends so you can’t save that Pewter planet."

Can't you keep the medal if you go straight into SM1? I vaguely remember that happening long ago, because there's a mission in one of the SM where you can get the Pewter planet, and if you already have it, instead they give you a gold star.

You cannot save the results of the final mission of WC1, thus you cannot keep the Pewter Planet without using a save-game editor. I think this is why they offer a mission for the Pewter Planet in the penultimate SM2 mission so that you do have an opportunity to save it.
