Wing Commander Online Concept Art Back Up (February 7, 2005)

A few years back we did an update about some concept art for Wing Commander Online. Limitations kept us from hosting the very cool images locally at the time, and eventually the original host took them down. Eder has helped us restore the images, and he even found a couple that we missed originally. You can now find them all here. These were created back in August of 1998 (a good month for WC fans). For a little more history on Wing Commander games that were in the works back then, check out our Privateer Online article.

At one point Eder tried modeling some of these conceptual designs. It's pretty interesting to see how they might have turned out.

The Confed fighter looks interesting if only because it looks like a scrapped together pirate fighter, like the uglys in Star Wars. Cool stuff...

Fantastic stuff. I really like the concept art. Especially the Kilrathi. There is definantly a hint of that 'used' 'rugged' look that we saw in the Wing Commander movie. Heck the Dralthi from the film looks almost identical to the concept art peice.
Just a question, does more of this concept art exist? Such as uniforms etc?

I remember seeing them first a few years back.

The confed fighters look unusual, but they are interesting, they remind of that spaceship that that bountyhunter guy in Starwars uses, but they have aslo alot common with WCp era fighters like separate engine pods and spindly ship bodies. Judging fom those art pieces I'd say that Project was aimed to be set a few years after SO.
The Dralthi looks really good, though it doesn't really look like anything from the movie, it's more like a spruced up Dralthi IV, though I'd cut off those small fins. I remeber seeing some other cool kilrathi fighter back then,

That's perhaps the coolest one of the whiole bunch. I really like that one.

The confed capships are awful, though. They are unlike anything eve seen in WC. No matter how different the designs in various games were, they all used to look sleek and fast, but those are just bricks with engines attached.

Yup, Feng did some really cool stuff. Most of his Confed stuff didn't feel like Confed to me, but I liked it. I loved his Kilrathi stuff though.

If there was interest I might try modelling that big tug looking ship in the middle...

That's a big Cruiser! The Confed capships are a departure from some previous ones, but no more so than from WC2 to WC3 I think. Had the game been produced, I think we'd be seeing those as a natural evolution of the WC3/4-Prophecy designs. I think I like the Confed fighters. That one "tall" one is an odd perspective when you look at it head on, but if you look at its side view, it makes a bit more sense.

What you say? Priv 3 is not Priv Online? (aware of that)

Though somehow I'm not surprised you would be against mixing elements from two seperate (yet similarly named) unreleased projects. The speculative canon of the nonexistant and all that.
