Wing Commander II Enigma campaign with SO

vindicator

Rear Admiral
So I replayed the game and I just have a real sense of the game missing the mark that the first one hit and even the third one hit. This being the sense of magnitude of the war.

The reason I say this is because I never get the scope or the feel of the size of the enigma campaign itself because we don't seem to hear about any other operations in the sector. This is either very seldom if at all.

The explanation of the campaign itself seems to only take place in few lines of an exchange with angel where she explains how the Enigma sector got it's name and she says something along the lines of "The strange jump qualities of this sector would allow the Kilrathi to possibly jump right into the heart of Confed territory."

So really what brought me to post this was that I am wondering if there is more outside of the game itself that develops this little piece of canon like the fact that maybe a major incident that is not in the game itself but would have made them aware of the danger of the Kilrathi taking Enigma?

Also, is there anything that would tell us any other task forces involved or smaller operations in the same sector?

The last question has to do with the end of the 6th fleet. Is there anything that sort of points to what a loss like that does to hinder Confed ops? I get that it's supposed to be big, but you never hear anything about it in the novels or future games as far as I know.

You do hear about it in the novels, although it's not directly stated as the 6th fleet. In ER they talk about Confed carrier losses (8 carriers during 2666), some of those are presumably related to the 6th fleet.

If I remember correctly (and I could be wrong because I often am, and I haven't read the book in a long time), doesn't the Kilrathi fleet jump through Enigma in order to get to Sol in "Fleet Action"?

It seems to me, again if I remember correctly, the first engagement of the Kilrathi Fleet is in one of the systems of the Enigma sector.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong though. Man, I have to read that book again!

Which fleet are you talking about?

The BIG fleet with the new carriers came straight in along the least time course from Kilrathi space. Least time means going through Vega sector, IMO.

We know they hit through Sirius. That leaves just a couple of possible pathways back to Kilrah. There was some discussion regarding their likely jump course in Fleet Action after Paladin gets home with the data.

There were other strike groups, formed around their old carriers, which hit other sectors. You can argue that there'd have been one in Gemini, one through Epsilon/Enigma, we know one went into Landreich to pin them down. They may have put one down a different jump line in Vega.

Wow! I just got thoroughly trounced!

Very nice. Like I said, I wasn't positive about it and it seems that you got it pretty well sewn up.

Speaking of hitting Earth through Enigma, how is jumping in that sector supposed to work? In WC2, Angel says it's possible to cross the entire sector in one leap, but on the Prophecy universe map there aren't any unusually long jump lines that allow this. Can some jump points be bypassed there, letting a ship leap directly from, say, Blish to Ghorah Khar without stopping at the stars in-between? Everyone seems to play the usual hopscotch from system to system in WC2, though.

I can see that Enigma clearly has strategic value via bypassing the Vega front and hitting Sol from the flank, but I don't know how this instant sector-jumping is supposed to fit into it.

By the way, it's kind of funny how Angel (in the interests of exposition to the player) has to explain to Pilgrim-Blair the basic jump mechanics of the sector he's lived in for the last decade. :p

From what I gathered from the games, and subsequent readings is that it was possible to jump straight through Enigma (as Angel stated), but the Kilrathi didn't have access to the jump point (Must be in Terran controlled space), as it was obviously never used. Or maybe the Cats didn't know about it's existence yet, and it was vital to keep control of most of the sector so that they didn't get a chance to discover it.

As to why there is no direct jump line on the Prophecy map, you can subscribe to different thoughts on the issue:
1) The developers forgot about this phenomenon when drawing that map (The real world explanation)
2) The Enigma insta-jump is through some kind of spatial phenomenon other than a jump hole, and thus wouldn't be classed as a traditional "jump point". In addition, it may be a dangerous jump (ala the jump in the WC Movie) and thus actively discouraged.

The main person who made the map still posts to Crius.net here. When the map was still in the preliminary stages, it was put online for fans to go over and suggest any additions. The real explanation is closer to your number 2. See the diagram in the Confed Handbook that shows numerous special jump lines in Vega if the ability to use the special Charybdis Quasar is available.

Wow! Cool to know that members of the development team post here! Very rarely does that happen, and does lend me hope that maybe, just maybe, if we were to get a new WC, that the developers would possibly come to the community for some suggestions.

Regardless, it was my understanding that it would be #2 on my list that would have been it, after all, Angel did state that Enigma had "special properties" or something to that effect. Especially after the WC Movie, this was my thought.

Angel's mention of Nifelheim, Fiddler's Green and Midian comes to mind. As well as various destroyer escorts of the Concordia jumping to other systems for various reasons. As well as all the escort and courier missions you do early on before being promoted to the combat roster on the Concordia.

Doesn't a Bartender in Priv also talk about the 6th fleet?
Yesh.

Yeah Capt Johnny and other former Dev members have been really great to us over the years. He's the one who's been providing a lot of the WCP development docs that have been posted to the front page lately.

I have no doubt that a new WC development team would come to certain members of the CIC for advice/suggestions. We know they pay attention and are very caring of the community, one need only read Star*Soldier for Arena to see all the community props they give throughout it to members that have done a lot over the years.
