Wing Commander Games and Windows XP - A Summary

No, you can't patch the CD. You can try installing it in DOSBox and seeing how it runs (make sure to enable dynamic core in the .conf file). Are you able to apply the Windows 95 patch? You can install it in DOSBOx, apply the patch and start it up in Windows.

YOu could also create a special autoexec.bat file to be able to load games in the command prompt by using it. I had such a file and actually ran WC3 with it on Xp home without dosbox or even VDMS program i now use. Next post i will try and give the layout for such a file which can easily be created with notepad or wordpad.

Hi Guys

No matter what I try, (Dosbox, VDMS, Windows Compatibility etc) Armada says EMS driver is not VCPI compliant. Any Ideas people?

Thanks

MG

Have you tried to create a special autoexec.bat file to run the game? If you look at the manuals that come with the game they give you the optimal settings for autoexec and config files (which you can easily make with notepad). Dont forget though to make sure your cd-rom drive is included in them (Hard drive is built in already so dont worry about it). THis might help. You then have to got to the advanced setting in the properties option and enter the hard drive address to enable them for that game.

Did you see our Armada DOSBox walkthrough? Set ems=false in your dosbox.conf.

FINALLY got my vanilla WC3 in the mail.

discs are in great condition. The game however runs very..... spotty on DOSBOX. the joystick won't calibrate properly, and there's probably more issues...

Yay, WC3 works!

The good news: Movies, sound, midi, even my USB joystick, all work! The movies play near flawlessly, its truely a sight for sore eyes, its been nearly 5 years since I played this game.

The bad news: Space combat. That's about it really. The actual flight's very choppy... its still playable, but if there's any way to make it a bit more.... smooth, that'd be great.

I've abandoned the DOSBOX and have switched to using VDMSound, which works great... except for the spaceflight.

In case you were wondering, I got a P4 1.5 ghz with a gig of memory.

Its about three years old.

Is that with the dynamic core option enabled in DOSBox? A 1.5 GHz computer is probably just too slow, even with that.

What soundcard do you have? Onboard or some PCI one?

All Right, the actual flight combat in the vanilla version of WC3 is now more or less smooth when running in XP using VDMSound.

Of course its pretty silly how I had to make it work...

I basically have to press and hold in the shift key, and for some odd reason, this makes everything flow like silk.

Weird, huh?

The shift key is a valid command in the game for speeding up turn rate when controlling with the keyboard.

Alright... so I'm playing WC3 using dosbox... everything's working great except when i get to mission 4 in Orsini system, where I'm supposed to escort a civilian transport defending against several fighters and a corvette. On this mission dosbox always crashes. It also crashes on several of the higher training missions. How can this be fixed?

Set priority to normal

What does that mean, set priority to normal? I've been trying to get WC3 KS to work for me and I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong. I used to be able to get it past the Origin movie, and actually made it to the Locanda system before the game crashed and now I can't get past that damn movie. BTW I was able to watch all the movies with no problem at one point too. Anyone got some Ideas?

How powerful is your computer? WC3 is a very demanding game of DOSBox, so it's possible the capships and action are overloading the emulator. In that case, all the usual tips for reducing load apply. Turn down the effects, switch from SVGA to VGA and disable any background programs. Although the dynamic core apparently scales, make sure your cycles limit is sufficient to give the game enough power to operate.

WC4 Sound issues

kk so downloaded/installed the patches for xp usage but getting some very choppy sound issues any suggestions???

You'll get a lot more help if you describe your situation and ask your question in the form of sentences. Did you change WC4 to run in Windows 95/98 compatibility mode? What sort of hardware do you have? What have you tried to alleviate the problem so far?
