Wing Commander: 20th Anniversary Proposals

I agree with this poster! You know something you're hiding from us!

The people deserve to know!

You guys are reading WAY to much into this.

1) It's inevitable that they know something - they've never let an anniversary pass without celebrating it here at the CIC. Should they keep those plans secret? Yes! It makes it more fun!

2) If they DID know anything from an official source or in an official capacity they could not share it regardless of who deserves to know.

So just cool it - and be happy something exciting is coming up.

Yes I know. Thought I would chance it anyway!

Im really looking foward to finding out about whatever is going on:)

If there was a multiplayer element in which would be kool that would be great, but I would not want it to be a online only experience where you'd have to pay a subscription fee just to play it forget that idea!...forget remakes, combine elements of Mass Effect and Ace Combat, and you've got yourself a good recipe for the next installment!

You can already play WCP multiplayer. HCl made a basic deathmatch patch years ago. It's part of the Enhancement package. The CIC even hosts a WCP MP Killboard.

Going off of this, battles could be held in a constant stream. That is to say that you log on and wait a short time for a battle to begin (battles would begin at specific times, and are not dependant on how many players there are. Empty slots would be filled with AIers).

Thus at 10:00 one battle would start, 10:10 another would start, etc.

Players would get into the first battle they're in line for (If you join at 10:01 you'd get into the 10:10 one for example). All online battles would be fleet engagements, pick your side, and what role you want (Bomber, escort, interceptor) and go at it until either all enemy cap ships are destroyed (all cap ships are AI controlled) or a time limit is reached (just to keep things moving).

This sorta reminds me of something like the space battles of Star Wars Battlefront II.

Unless they were remade to play in at least 720p high definition. OK, it's a dream...

There's a team making an HD version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, their method is to blow up the sprite several times, trace over it, and then get rid of any oddities present due to the pixel art format. They then redo the image in HD size, and scale it back down a bit. Something similar could work for Wing Commander, I think, possibly even to make 3D models that perfectly fit the originals while looking updated.

Of course, things like the Standoff models make such an approach outdated for 3D games like Wing Commander, where models are more natural for such a thing. Still, rather pretty.

Apparently your sarcasm meter is off. I was just having a little bit of fun.

I have a feeling that they know something, but can't reveal it. Regardless, it's all good and I look forward to hearing about it whenever it does come up.

It was years ago, but I vividly remember there a was a release of ALL the Lucas Arts Star Wars related games in one big package. It consisted of about 5 - 7 CD-ROMs and it included the X-Wing, Tie Fighter and one Dark Forces games that had been released up to that point.

The key was, there were more Star Wars games from Lucas Arts on the way after that release. To bad Wing Commander didn't do that back in, say about 96. They needed a package with more than just the KS!

However, I only saw it once in store, so perhaps it didn't sell well.

It's tough. ALL the Wing Commander games? It would be costly! I don't know if I could shell out the money that this could cost.

Costly how? Complete remakes of everything aren't going to happen, but if they did, they'd be full price for each game. A rerelease would have to be priced comparably with other games on sale today though.

Think something along the lines of Command and Conquer: The First Decade. I cant remember how much that cost, but I dont think it was vastly different to any new release at the time.

Im surprised EA havn't given Wing Commander this treatment already (Kilrathi Saga aside) - but Id really love to see it, both for old time fans and to generate new interest in the franchise

The challenge of a "first decade" type pack for Wing Commander is that many of the games predate the C&C Ones. Whereas I think all the C&C games were made for win95 or later, Compatability becomes an issue with wing commander. Short of packing the games with Dosbox, it becomes cost prohibitive to have to addapt the old games to run in windows xp or vista to the point where 95 percents of the population isn't going to be challenged by quirks in the system.

It's not impossible, but it's not as easy as it may seem.

I happen to have the full series of Commander Keen (minus Dreams and 6) downloaded via Steam, which seamlessly launches and runs the game via DOSBox in just such a manner as you're describing, without any hitch whatsoever. There's no reason a similar setup couldn't be used on WC1-4 and Spinoffs, and Prophecy/Secret Ops shouldn't be too bad, either.

THe space quest collection that was released a couple of years ago shipped with a dosbox based launcher. This kind of solution is interesting, but hardly appealing to people like us who already have the dos versions... This pack is supposed to cater to the nostalgic folks like us but why should I buy this pack if I already have the dos versions and can download dosbox for free? What's the incentive?

Launching through steam is an interesting option... A preconfigured dosbox setup isn't a bad idea, but I think that anyone here who's tried running the games in dosbox can attest that no dosbox setup is ever 100% one size fits all.

Also don't forget EA's last move with Red Alert... they gave away Red alert 1 and 2 for free as a promotion for Red Alert 3. Red alert 1 was free for everyone and 2 was a bonus for preordering). Putting boxes of WC in stores with dosbox packed in hardly seems economically viable considering most people aren't going to want to pay full price.

I would like to see a "remastered" edition but rather than remaking the games entirely I'd just like to see some touch ups done. Maybe allowing higher screen resolutions on wing commander 3/4/prophecy. As well as getting Hamill, Wilson, Mc Dowell and the other actors back in to record full voice acting for wc 1/2 It's always annoyed me that there is super wing commander/wc1 segacd with speech but no pc version with speech and that wc2 didn't have speech. I think these are achievable goals with a much more limited budget than a full fledged remake involving a large team of programmers/artists.

As a separate pack, it did.

It still didn't entirely have full speech. There was full speech in flight but only selected cinematics in WC2 had speech... and if you didn't have the speech pack just the intro had speech.

I was referring to the lack of speech throughout WC2 in general. I have kilrathi saga and wc2 deluxe edition for dos. Neither game has full speech. Only speech in the intro and some comms.
