Who runs the Homeworlds?

I know that Confed rules many of the human colonies, but how is the governing structure? Are there planet presidents or governors and the planets have one leader or are they divided in states or something like that?

Theres definately a senate, as we see it in WCIV, voting on the war with the Border Worlds, which leads me to suspect its some sort of democracy

Planets have different forms of local governments (it's a Confederation, afterall), and they send senators to the... senate.

There are also sector governers, seen in a bunch of places (Privateer, WCP, SO).

I would expect some sort of Confederacy structure. Each planet or moon with at least a certain minimum population (say a hundred thousand people or so) would have one or more representatives in the Senate, with underpopulated areas falling under the representative of the nearest represented planet. From what we see in WCIV, the Senate has one house instead of two like the United States, but it is not known if all represented worlds have an equal number of Senators or whether they are apportioned according to population. Legislative powers seem to be invested in the Senate, with Executive powers invested in the President (and presumably there is a Supreme Court as well). We know little of the Confederate constitution, but it is likely that planets have autonomy in domestic matters as long as their local governments remain democratic in nature--the Confederation presumably guarantees basic rights to its citizens. In all, I would liken the Confederate government to the American govenment between the spread of the telegraph and the outbreak of the Civil War--communications are pretty much instant via tachyon transmission between jump bouy relays, but physical transportation between worlds still takes weeks, so heavy centralization is extremely difficult.

We should make a FAQ on this subject, and hopefully the new tv show will shed some light on the political systems in the WC unvirse.

I believe the Muffin Man is the leader you speak of.:)

The Confederation government can be assumed that it is like the United States government is today. A main governemnt, then smaller governments governing over the states (in this case the planets) and so on filtering down to smaller community governments.

It would be interesting to see just hopw many levels of of government there. If you had a central government, sector governments, system governments, and planetary governments, as well as government at the national level and below, then the system could get choked with red tape pretty quickly. I imagine some levels would be cut out altogether or kept to the minimum.

Best, Raptor

I'd tend to agree with that. Too much bureaucracy is a bad thing, after all. Especially on such a massive scale. :)

Yeah, I think it's seems to be a prolific subplot in the series; WC4, WCP, Action Stations to name a few

I don't think that the government would be that complex. Especially if it has lasted so long. But let us not forget, the Government nearly killed the entire Confederation by forcing them to disarm. If the Confederation government had listened to the military then things would have gone much differently. Besides that one occurance the government has worked pretty smoothly for the most part, at least what I have read/seen/heard.

We see in WC4 that Paladin is the head of the senate, kinda like the Speaker of the House in the U.S. house of representaives. I would think that with the amount of senators that were seen in WC4 there are many planets and colonies with at least one representative. But with some colonies so far away form Sol it might be kinda difficult for all the senators to get to the senate. Unless the senators stay in Sol for their entire term in office and when that senaors term is up he/she is replaced .

Yep, they would probably have to stay on Sol while in office. I know some of our senators here in the US have to move to Washington D.C. when they take on their term.

Ha, Coruscant makes the Confederation government look simple. Whoops, wrong universe, sorry. :)

I would imagine that there would be a balance between each level of government (Confed, sector, system, etc), each level of government would have powers over the areas it was most efficient at handling. Provided overlapping powers is kept to a minimum (don't look at the Australian Federal and State governments...), I think that should work out.

[But what do I know about politics. :)]

Thanks, yo kept me from having to post this thread myself! :p

I would think that Confed might have some elements from the first American government... after all, it's constitution is called the ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION... Obviously though, the government is more akin to modern democracies than any 18th century former colonies.
