What's Earth Like?

I noticed when wathing the ending for The Price of Freedom that the US Capital building (I assume it is) where the Senate debate on war is surrounded by high rise buildings, not sort of isolated like it is today. I also say that it's all set at night with cloudy or polluted skies. We see something similar in the lose ending for Heart of the Tiger. Which got me wondering, just what is Earth like in the Wing Commander games?

I think the clouds in the "losing" sky were actually smoke clouds . . you'll notice that earth has been bombed to all fuck, pretty much.

As to the clouds over the Senate Chamber in the beginning of TPOF . . . maybe there was a storm a-brewin'? It's not hard to believe that, in the 2600's, there's still rain and clouds that occur naturally. ::shrugs:: Go figure.

I think, aside from the technological advancements in vehicles, and possibly some extra industrial and residential development, probably pretty much the same.

Blade Runner takes over.

Anyone notice how sci-fi tends to recycle the same cyberpunk cliches over and over?

New Detroit reminded me of Blade Runner. It was pretty much one huge city covering the planet and it was always raining too.

Does anyone know how long humans were supposed to have populated the Gemini sector? I would imagine that it would take some time to completely cover a planet with buildings (theres a word for this, when citys grow so large that they merge together, but I cant think of it). And for that reason I would assume that earth is much the same, heavily populated, with citys covering as much of the worlds surface as possible. But being earth, and home to the confederation I would imagine its much cleaner then New Detroit.

Earth is probably a big mess, circa WCIV -- dealing with the after affects of a multiple cities being destroyed...

Come to think of it, didn't Tolwyn giving a passing description of Earth when he was talking to Blair at the ConFleet base?

I dunno, but I'm sure they didn't want us harming those poor, defenseless kilrathi. They probably made posters of kilrathi cubs and said "How could you hate a face like this?"

By the end of the war, that cub probably blew up the transport they were riding in to go on some sort of demented PETA tour in Vega. Stupid, stupid PETA.

Meh, it was something like that that gave me an idea for the fic I wrote last year, where Philip reacts with disgust to protest againt the war with the Kilrathi and the hypocritical and illegal actions taken by them. But yes, in a way you're right. There are times where the worst thing we can do is to do nothing. What would have happened if the Tiger's Claw did not go after the Sivar? Hmmm? What would happen if Blair decided that blowing up Kilrah was not worth it?

I dunno, but I hope you aren't alergic to cats! You'll probably be seeing a whole damned lot of them.

On a similar note . . . the books prove that Thrakhath and the Emperor were rather unpopular . . since Thrahkath died in a fighter on Kilrah's surface, what would have happened if Blair had, instead, turned the Emperial palace into a hole in the ground? With Thrakhath and the Emperor dead, the clans would have gone into civil war over who was the rightful heir, and Confed would have had time to rebuild their forces and bump off the remaining warlords who survived the civil wars. Think about THAT, how 'bout it. Maybe a few of us should get together and write an alternate timeline novel . . it'd be "what if" canon . . . obviously not part of the real timeline, but canon otherwise.

True. They'd have to get close enough first, and if supposedly "the best of the best" like I would think Angel's covert ops group would have been weren't able to do anything, then maybe Confed felt a diffirent approach was necessary. Yes, I know her mission wasn't to assassinate the Kilrathi Emperor as far as we know. But, the Navy SEAL group Red Cell would perform clandestine operations such as breaking into military installations, and that was what their orders were. But they would also have another, secret objective, such as eliminate a terrorist cell for example. It wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for Angel to have her covert ops group to turn the Emperor's palace into a cinder if possible, on top of her other mission.

Dad doesn't like movies which is set at night (ie dark) more than half the time. Which seems to include many movies made these days.

Was there a time when Earth itself was uninhabitable in between now and the 27th century? In WCU 'history', I mean.

[Never mind, I found it in the old timeline. There was a quarantine from 2219 to 2423. Ouch.]
