What is Strike Commander?

Hey guys,

A long time ago, in a store I saw a game which was a strategy game based in the Wing Commander universe. At the time, I thought the game was called "Strike Commander" but recently I've heard of this other game, "Wing Commander Armada" which also had strategy game elements. So, which of these is the Wing Commander strategy game? Or are they BOTH strategy games? and if so, does "Strike Commander" have any actual relation to the WC Universe?

Wing Commander Armada is the strategy game.

Strike Commander was a game Chris Roberts developed after Wing Commander II. It tells its story in the same way as WC1 and 2, but it's not in the same universe as Wing Commander (as far as we know). It's about a squadron of mercenary jet fighter pilots in the near future (2011?).

If you want more info about Strike Commander, I recommend Mobygames. They have a lot of info on games like credits and box covers.
A few screenshots there

and for armada here

It's very much in the style of the Wing Commander storylines, though, so it's well worth the play once you work out how to fly the F-16s. :)

Strike Commander is the bowling simulation set in the WC Universe! you get to make strikes and spares with Maniac, Hobbes, Angel and Lightspeed! It's great!

Ehehehe, I'm lying.

And I never got the hang of flying the jets. I'm usually quite lame in flight sims.

One great thing it adds is management. Because the game is set in a war torn future (filled with mercenary groups along side governments) you're little mercenary group doesn't get the funding most government military's get. You're squadron has to make business deals to get missions and manage it's ordinance (purchasing missiles, upgrades etc) for your planes. Also you have your main base and then during missions you move off to a base camp.
All these small things add up to make a great gaming experience. The game comes with full speech as well if you get the CD-ROM version I believe!

I think it took me at least three tries spread over several years to get the hang of it. Well... that, and trying to avoid the "Cannot find LILTRE.TRE" message or some such when trying to play after installation. I had to manually edit the config file - it shouldn't have to be like that. And that happened on all of my CD copies. :(
