One of my players did that, I let him make a crater but let him climb out alive

Well my guess is that a 'chute deploys, and you end up landing on the planet surface...
If you're lucky, a Confed shuttle comes to pick you up...

Pods have thrusters for manuvering in space and landing on Planets.

Apparently not the Kilrathi one, we see landing on a planet surface in the ATV episode 10 - On Both Your Houses...

Ummm, since when does WCP throw a scenario at you where you'd even be faced with ejecting in atmosphere?... I haven't played the game thru yet, but I have the official guide, and I don't recall reading about any planetside (atmospheric) missions. Am I missing something?...Can anyone answer this for me?...

You are absolutely right. No atmosphere missions at all since WC4. Which is a shame. Added to the variety.
