I definitely like WC4 and WC2 best for plot. Gameplay in Prophecy was cool, but WC4 still cooler because of the wider variety of missions.
Now there's something I want to see in a new WC game: 3D hardware accelerated planetary missions!
Why don't they make a Fleet Action game. With todays cards it should be possible to do that final battle. That would be cool!

But if you think you have a definition that says WC1 has an amazing one then please enlighten me
Because its the only one of the 5 I haven't played to the end more than once

Just cause I'm a privateering nut, I'd like to see another privateer game. Except where you're part of a crew. Maybe flying as escort to a cargo ship. That would allow for a tighter plot, while still allowing for time to do missions of your choice. Maybe 2 or 3 people to the crew. Another wingman, a cargo ship pilot and a mechanic. THen you could always hire the wingmen on for sporadic missions.
But most important is plot to a WC game. You need to have a good flight engine and stuff, but if you don't have plot then all your doing is flying around killing stuff with no real reason.

...which brings us to the next question: Do we want it to have the WC3-ish Han Solo feel to it like in P1, or the eccentric British everything-is-corrupted sense of P2?

I would most like to set a DVD Wing Commander Collectors box set, this would need:
Kilrathi Saga, better speed compenation for WC2, hires for both and bilinear filtering
DVD version of WC3 with new engine
WCIV DVD with new engine
WCP Gold DVD with new engine, missing scenes and missing fiction from SO, viewer built into game
Privateer designed to work on Windows 95, hi res and bilinear filtering
Privateer 2 Deluxe DVD with 3d acceleration and working slow down routines
I would gladly pay $500 for that collection

Atmosphere,story,imagination.These are things things which I would like to see.To me this(as much as I like Unreal Tournament) is the main thing that makes a game truly worthwhile.Of course, it goes both ways.Good gameplay is neccessary to keep you interested in playing no matter how good the story is.Luckily,Wing Commader has always been a game which did both.Right now,however,I just want to get a new game.

What I don't get is that you say you want to leave the WC1+2 engines alone and then say you want them hires and bilinear filtering. Doesn't that constitute an engine change?
I think any change though would remove the nostalgic feel.
It's like with Sierra's enhanced versions of their early games. I like PQ1 and SQ1 VGA SCI, but sometimes I just want to play the old version in 16 color EGA.

Why do you people want to update the WC3/4 engines but not the WC1/2? Personally, I don't think any engine update is nessessary, that would ruin the atmosphere. It would be like watching Star Wars without the John Williams music and wheres the love in that?
