WCPedia: Organizing Different Bases...

Dundradal

Frog Blast the Vent Core!
So this came up when thinking about Ayer's Rock (Mandarin Base from SO2). Where does it belong?

Right now it sits under Confed Bases (which is a temporary home). I'm not sure about creating a Mandarin Bases category just for it (do we know of any other Mandarin installations?). Aeronautico suggested adding it to a Pirate Bases category, but I'm not sure if it would fit in there since I don't think of Mandarins as pirates.

Suggestions from the gallery?

I don't think anyone is gonna go for this, but we could place under Kilrathi bases. Although human administered, the base operated in the name of the Kilrathi and was open to the Kilrathi. Just a suggestion, but I have a feeling this one will be rejected.

A system of classification isn't of value if it isn't classifying things correctly; Ayer's Rock needs a Society of Mandarin Bases category, even if it's the only one we know of (*how* many times have people griped about our including the Academy fighters in the WC2 ships section page over the years?).

The factional division makes sense for the two biggest factions, Confed and the Kilrathi Empire. But for other, smaller groups? The thing is, while Confed has exclusively Confed-only ships, and the Kilrathi Empire has exclusively Empire-only ships, none of those other groups have anything exclusive to themselves.

Ayer's Rock is a Mandarin base - but in all likelihood, it's really just yet another asteroid base of a similar type to the pirate bases seen in Privateer, and those in turn are simply civilian mining bases. Similarly, the Rigel supply depot is not something unique to the "mutineer" faction (which I'm sure someone will eventually want to create) - it's a Confed installation that was taken over by mutineers.

What would probably be best is to have a category like "Other", which would incorporate all those smaller groups like Retros, Mandarins, pirates, non-criminal civilians of various kinds (bounty hunters, merchants, human privateers, Kilrathi privateers, etc.). Otherwise, you will end up with a number of categories that only include one or two ships and bases... and many of those categories will share those items with another category.

In all honesty, I don't think we'd even need an "other" faction. Put Kilrathi bases and Confed bases as subcategories of the "Bases" category, and anything that classifies as "other" goes under the bases category, but not under a subcategory. Best of both worlds, if you ask me.

Independent bases might do for now. I was going to say that while the Mandarins aren't pirates - at least not in the same league as the pirates we see in Privateer - they probably wouldn't fit in with the official Confederation bases.

In connection with this....

The Places category should be removed and folded under "Bases and Installations" perhaps under a subcategory. As it stands now there are 3 entries under Places but I think they should be rolled into one place.
