I'm a little confused. by your post. When you say "Now it crashs everytime i click on my icon" do you mean that you never got it working at all? Or that after playing it it has since crashed every time? Have you rebooted your computer since then? Does " it crashes my hd at the same time" mean your entire system locks up? Or is it sending you to the desktop?

I noticed you are using XP though, and that you might want to also look into maybe updating your video drivers.

If it has crashed every time since the initial download is it possible it didn't install/dowload fully or correctly? Did you use GOGs download manager?

i am updating my drivers now thought i was up to date thanks for that. as for your main question. Let see if I can explain this more. now sure how to explain this one. Never something this problem. if I click on my icon it crashes my primary hd, i have two. i get a error message explorer.exe, stating it cant read memory after few times crashing my hd without restarting my computer it'll start but go to a black screen and i hear a error message sound. but cannt it view cause my computer freezes and i have to use my reset button. i should add that if i try to go properties it crashes my hd too.

the exact message i get

explorer.exe application error

the instruction at "0x7c910cbd" referenced memory "0x0044005c" the memory could not be "read" i assume is what i get on my black screen too

i download the ac3filter it fixed my problem. i noticed during the openning it skip some dailogue between the transport and escort is this normal for this verison?

does the ac3filter infer with my modern games like mass effect or swtor?

I am using Windows 7 64 bit. I had to install ac3filter and set compatibility to windows 98/ME. I also have zeckensack's glide wrapper installed (mechwarrior 2 is still fun). gog's wing commander 4 seems to work fine for me. I just wish some of these ships would have itts. I cant hit crap lol.

There doesn't seem to be any skipped dialogue. I had no sound whatsoever in the fmvs without ac3filter.

For 95 percent of the problems people are having, installing ac3filter and making sure you have a proper DVD codec installed should fix any issues with this release. AC3filter as the name implies if for decoding AC3 audio which is a DVD video standard. Most DVD audio (dolby digital etc) is encoded in AC3... This should not affect any other game at all.

If GOG isn't telling people when they download that they might need this then they should. When we sent them the patch, we made clear everything that we knew of that could be an issue and of course AC3filter was at the top of the list.

Is Wing Commander IV, GOG edition essentially, Wing Commander 4 dvd edition, cracked and running Gulikozilla's patches? With blessing from EA? Surely they could have patched the executable in a better way? didn't WCNews.com get the Wing IV sourcecode from ex EA employees? Wouldn't it have been better to just modify the source code to have proper video playback support, and release the game with new executable files?

I think you are blowing this issue out of proportion. A handful of people are having issues that we're working on. The patch is working extremely well given the circumstances. That said, GOG should have been clearer about people needing to install proper AC3 and Mpeg2 codecs. We were aware that this might be an issue and informed them of this when they were sent the package.

Even if we could admit to playing with the source code though, it's really nowhere near as simple a job as you make it sound to change the executables. Given the time frame and such this just wasn't a possible option. Given enough time and testers, we could theoretically make the game play whatever file format we wanted and reencoded all the videos in h264 or something, but there was no way this was ever going to be a possibility for this release.

It would probably be a hell lot of work to get that code to compile again. Unfortunately todays compilers are not 100% downwards compatible, especially if some sort of suite like Visual C was used.
