Cant reply on the previous thread. I also was refered to the rules. Not sure which one i broke and i certainly didnt intend to vreak any. My apologies...

Im simply trying to find a way to play wing commander 4 on pc. cant get it at my local computer store and i havent found a place to purchase it on the net. im assuming it has been discontinued...

help please

You're breaking the rules since downloading games is illegal. There's a lot of people here who'd like a copy of some or other WC game but it's important that we support the people who created this game by actually buying them fair and square. You can probably find WC4 on Ebay or ask around game shops with "used" sections.

Rule 11 - the one with about 400 references to warez.

https://www.wcnews.com/wheretobuy.shtml has a rundown of auction sites and regular shops that sell Wing Commander products. I don't think we have a specific WC4 location, but there should be a number of auction sites that you can use.

of course we should buy legit games, but i figured my only route was to download the game since aparrently you cant purchase the game anymore. again, my bad. i just dont see how your supporting the developers by buying a used game from ebay, but oh well. sorry for breaking rules.

i only have one local pc store and they dont have a used section. very bummed, i figured i would be able to find this game. was this the final game in the series?

After WC4 they released Privateer 2, Wing Commander Prophecy and Wing Commander Secret Ops. https://www.wcnews.com/back.shtml should have everything.

While buying from eBay won't support the developers, WC4 is still easy to get through proper channels. And if it wasn't, it'd still be forum policy not to tolerate piracy here.

damn, i had no idea that theyve put out so much product after 4. have they just discontinued 4 and below? also how do the games after 4 stack up? good stuff?

thanks for your help kris

though your link was very informative and made me realize there is awealth of other material out there it wasnt much help as far as finding a place to buy the game. none of the links gave me any results.

if anyone can help me find this game i will be much appreciated. i played it as a youngster briefly for a few missions and was blown away. i just thought about it a couple days ago and was bummed to not be able to find it. now that ive found some history on the games id like to start back at WC3 since that marked the first game with professional movie scenes. whats the deal with prophecy? is it really better then WC4.

Once again, any help on finding these games would be much appreciated. I dont suppose anyone has "spares" theyd like to sell a newbie. Anyways thanks kris for the help and hopefully someone can give me some advice on how to nab these games.

You could also see about getting WC III and IV on the Playstation.

Second Hand games shops are a good place to found WC Games

I got WC I and II for £1.25 each (DOS 3 1/2 inch versions)

thanks guys. im bidding now for both WC3 and WC4. looks like i may be able to get them both for under 20 bucks! There is a prophecy for under 4 dollars, it must be to good to be true. I mean who would bother selling that complete game for 3.75?

you poor schmuck...

The secondhand PC store around me has had a copy of WC3 (boxed) on their shelves for weeks, asking only $10-12 (I forget which. I have 2 copies of it already, so I'm not interested).

Dude, buy one and send it to me, I have a burned copy (which my old computer's disc drive doesn't read CD-R's, and my other two XP computers don't support sound or joystick).

"While buying from eBay won't support the developers, WC4 is still easy to get through proper channels. And if it wasn't, it'd still be forum policy not to tolerate piracy here."

but your missing the point. sure i orginally wanted a place to dowload it (wrong, against rules) what is the difference in paying some guy money so he can go on a meth binge and me dowloading it from a website. the game is discontinued, so nobody ivolved in the making or marketing of the game is getting any loot from the product.

I am buying these games from aucion sites thanks to the members here, but im not getting KrisV's premise.

It would seem that getting anyone intrested in the series in anyway would be of paramount intrest to any member here. how is banning a thread with a newbie wanting to get into the old games benifiting this site or being inappropriate? And 3.9 gb is not that big.....

anyways thanks guys for the info, and may the flame war begin.

No flames, I agree that you're not really supporting anything other than building a larger WC community by getting your hands on the game however you do it.

On another note, I don't know where you live but if you have a Half Price Books or a chain store that sells similar products then you might be able to find it there. Of the 3 or 4 stores in my city they all have at least 1 WC game, and most have either 3 or 4. Priced for about $8~$12. I've often considered buying one of them but I doubt I could get them to work as they were meant to.

Check out halfbuy.com dude. They usually have alot of copies of WCIV. And Starvector.com.

Stop talking about halfbuy.com. It's a weirdo freaky site. Half.com is the good one.

i do have a hlaf price bookstore and im going to look there on my lunch break tody and hope to find one.

as for the dowlading topic. again i dont see how downloading a game for free is any worse then paying some dude 5-10 bucks for it. the developers wont see any of that money, and if anything i would think the developers at this point would like anyone to get a hold of these games by any means possible to enlarge the WC community. now im not sure if the entire series has been dicontinued or just the old games, but if the entire series is discontinued i would assume that enlarging the WC community would be of paramount intrest to members here in hopes that someday another game would be released due to popular demand and having a market to push the product to.

In my mind, there are several reasons we do not allow piracy here.

- No matter whether or not you have convinced yourself that it is moral, it is still illegal. This site and the community as a whole have always enjoyed a good working relationship with Wing Commander's copyright holders. I, personally, have no desire to see this damaged on account of someone not wanting to shell out five bucks for something.

- These games are still making money for their copywrite holders. Would Destination have been as interested in licensing a port of Wing Commander Prophecy if the original game were readily available on the internet? I'm sure you can download Wing Commander games somewhere -- but the minute the center of the online community starts condoning this, there is a significant decline in value.

- No matter what you have convinced yourself, piracy is simply selfishness. It is in no way a 'demonstration' to the world that there is interest in the franchise. It is entirely the desire to get something for nothing. I do not necessarily have anything against this concept -- but it is completely counter to how a community operates.

- The issue of respect, both self and community-wide. We love Wing Commander... aren't we willing to spend a few bucks to show that? Certainly, Electronic Arts isn't going to get any of the five dollars I might spend to buy a copy of Wing 2... but I'll feel better about myself, I'll have more respect for the product and having actually spent something on the game will help build a better, less selfish community.

The difference between downloading it for free and paying some guy for a real copy, is that downloading it is *illegal*. Now in the terms and conditions that our server host gives us, it has bits like not being allowed to host porn sites or warez sites (though we're currently looking in to a server which will allow porn.)

The point is, we're not about to put our necks on the line because you are too cheap to pay a few dollars for a nice set of CDs, some fun manuals and a great looking box to put on display.

Damn it, LOAF beat me to it.
