WC1 : Two questions

Sharpshooter

Rear Admiral
Hi everyone!

I have two questions about Wing Commander 1 (original DOS version):

1) In Hell's Kitchen 1, is it actually possible to save the Drayman? It never follows me when I autopilot, and if I try to escort it manually while staying fairly close to it, it blows up even though no ships are attacking it!

2) Is there a trick to get past minefields? I usually never have problems with asteroid fields, but I almost always get damaged in minefields - mines seem to damage me even when I am not crashing into them, unlike asteroids.

Also, for the WC veterans who want a big challenge, I noticed that it is possible to get a Medal of Valor in Hell's Kitchen 4. :)

For the minefield, I believe that the mines move on a collision course with you when they're nearby so try to go on full speed to circumvent that.

Hell's Kitchen is part of the losing storyline. Even if you did save the Drayman and "win" the following scenarios in Hell's Kitchen, you lose the game.

I believe this always happens in the original game. I'm not sure whether or not its a bug or if it's intentional... the intention may have been to show that you're in the losing system -- but at the same time, some later ports of the game change it so you can save the ship.

Mines are actually the opposite of asteroids -- you should move as quickly as possible to get through them.

That's interesting, I've never seen that.

Thank you very much! I tend to move slowly when trying to get through minefields, I guess this explains why I keep getting hurt. As for Hell's Kitchen 4, getting the Medal of Valor can be (or is) very difficult, since I think you need to destroy EVERYTHING by yourself, but it is possible (I've only managed it once, but I might try again, just for fun).

I've actually never thought about it!

I always went at high speed, not AB, but full speed...and would jink reflexively left right up or down randomly when I would see that one "different" (as in, the one that's going to whomp you) mine showed up front and center in my screen. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

Minefields aren't too bad as long as you're not fighting in them. That one WC1 mission where you fight those two Jalthi in the minefield, I like to kill my speed and not enter the mines and wait for them to come at me.

That was in the snes version. I just played the DOS version for the first time a week ago and was stunned that I had to avoid so many more.

But thankfully the killie kats are adept at running into asteroids.

Ah, is that it?
Sweet! Yeah, it made minefields a lot easier!

Killing that Fralthi on the last mission of the winning track was a lot easier if you bypassed the minefields and other fighters and just slashed in with all guns/missiles on the Fralthi :D

Not to mention that the 'impossible' mission in Kurasawa wasn't taht tough on the SNES. When I played the PC version i couldn't believe how quickly that thing blew up. Those kilrathi's are brutally ruthless.

On the computer? Hells yes. On the Snes? Not so much...

Not to mention Jalthis are green salthis.
