What were the names of the squadrons in WC1? I think the hornets were the Angry Bees but what were the others?

Killer Bees and the Star Slayers is all i remember now.

The four you fly out of are the Killer Bee's (Hornets), Blue Devils (Scimitars), the Star Slayers (Raptors) and the Black Lions (Rapiers). The Yellowjackets (Hornets) are also mentioned in the dialogue. The SNES version of WC1 substitutes "Blue Angels" for "Blue Devils" because, uhm, Nintendo is dumb.

(There are several other squadron's on the Tiger's Claw, though... flying Hellcats, Epees, Longbows, Sabres, Ferrets and Broadswords).

Did Hellcats, Epees, Longbows, Sabres, Ferrets and Broadswords fly around in that time then ?

I think you're stretching things a bit, LOAF. There is almost fifteen years between WC1 and when we first see the Hellcat and Longbow, ten years before we see the others. I know, you will say that designs don't get scrapped that often, but look at World War II. The Wildcat was completely phased out in favor of the Hellcat in only about three years. I daresay that the complement of the Claw consisted of Hornets, Scimitars, Raptors, and later, Rapiers. The Raptor basically fulfilled the role of strike craft at the time, as the WC2 manual refers to torpedo bombers as a relatively new development in 2665.

I know it is hair-splitting but as far as I remember only bombers with Phase shieldbreaking torpedoes are considered to be new in WC2 and we see already bombers in the WC movie.
But I am nevertheless of your opinion that there were no Hellcats or Longbows on the Tiger's Claw. But Broadsword are stationed on the Claw, as we see them in the movie which is considered canon (sad but true).

In the first episode of WCA there were hellcats and arrows. And in the next two you see stuff that looks kinda like Epees. Every episode pretty much has a Broadsword. So there is evidence they exist.

Yes, you are right, I remember (the traitor flees in an Arrow, doesn't he). But it is not said that they were stationed on the Claw because they only appear in that first episode where they are still on the academy planet (if I recall it correctly).

Howdy!
The other posters are correct -- the Broadsword, Epee, Ferret, Sabre, etc. all appear in WCA or in the movie assigned to the Tiger's Claw (the Arrow doesn't, though -- we see one stationed at Sirius, but not actually on the Tiger's Claw).

As for shields and torpedoes -- they've been around for a long, long time (since the outset of the war, in the case of torpedoes). Shields continually advance to levels where guns cannot penetrate them, and new torpedoes must be developed -- this is what was new in WC2 (and then again in WCP).

Supdon and Mekt, I would tend to ignore the movie and the ATV series as "official" trends...

The series, although set at a time where Blair and Maniac are fresh from the academy, do not take into account any of the ships you fly in WC I on the Claw (except perhaps Scimitars?), and the characters from WC I (except Maniac and Tolwyn) are simply absent...

As for the movie, there is even no need to debate on how contradictory it is from the games, in several aspects...

I would tend to trust the game manuals, saying that indeed phase shield were tech was developed only later, which also led to the development of torpedoes by Confed, whose plans were stolen by the Kilrathi as well...

And as LOAF might point out, there were Broadswords and other ships on the Claw, but perhaps only later on... ot at least NOT all the ships you guys mentioned were onboard when you start the WC I game... :)

All of these things appear in multiple sources, though -- torpedoes appear before WC1 in Action Stations, Wing Commander Academy and the movie... the Broadsword appears in the movie and in WCA... and there's no reason for them not to be on the Tiger's Claw -- afterall, isn't the Broadsword in WC2 the *fourth* model (A-17D)?

(For the record, all the Tiger's Claw episodes of WCA take place during WC1, not before (G)).

I was just surprised how exact they got the look of the Hellcats to be. Everything else seems to have been modified a little bit. And it had been around long enough for them to have made a statue of one back at the academy.

Perhaps I should precise more: I do not accept the Movie as official WC history for my personal view on WC (it had nothing in common with the games except the names) but I do very well accept WCATV as official history. But one thing disturbs me: Loaf, what does your (G) mean in your last statement? That it is not serious at all? Good.
Because I cannot imagine how it would fit when WCATV took place during WC!

If there's one thing I'm always serious about, it's Wing Commander history. I just like to <Grin> -- it's a nasty habit.

(The first episode of WCA takes place before WC1 -- it's Blair and Maniac being assigned to the Tiger's Claw. The other episodes of Wing Commander Academy all take place *later* than the early WC1 missions (starting 2654.110) because they're a story leading up to the disruption of the 2654 Sivar Ceremony (on October 20th).

That is confusing for me indeed! So Blair gets constantly demoted to cadet? Because you attain higher ranks quite fast in WC1.

(BTW, Loaf did you get my email about the trade for the German novels against the English?)

What about all the other pilots in the WC I game???

You can't make that co-exist with the ATV series Bandit, because beyond Maniac, nobody flies with Blair except these pilots we have only heard about in the series...

Where's Angel?? Where's Iceman, Spirit, Knight...
Where's ole laddy Taggart? :)
