WC1 advice needed

Unforgiven

Spaceman
I'm currently in the 'defend captured Ralari' mission in WC1.
It goes as follows: me and Bossman fly out in Rapiers (yugh!). First in an asteroid field we have to deal with 4 salthi. Easy enough. Then we arrive at the Ralari and it's under attack by several Gratha. It takes about 3 seconds before the Ralari dies.
Is there any way to do this?
I've never been able to get this one right, and I to do a 'no failed missions' game.
Please Help!

Yeah, I've problems with this one, too, as I'm sure we've all had.

Although I've never successfully completed the mission, I believe you have to find manually to the Ralari, as activating autopilot will put you on the wrong side.

Or something like that.

You just got to be really fast with a really good aim, I guess.

Don't waste any missiles on the Salthi, first off. Then, when you reach the Ralari let loose a couple missiles on the Grathas and push it in full throttle. Tell Bossman to engage one Gratha while you hit another, use full guns and try ot kill it on the first pass. This seriously is the hardest mission of the game. AFter you save it from the Gratha you'll get ambushed by a wing of Dralthi, if I remember correctly and since the Ralari has already taken a pounding, they are even harder to stop, or at least more critical that you do. Hoep this helps, it's how I was able to stop them.

Well I was already varying my attempts between manual and auto approach, and I also haven't wasted any missiles on the Salthi.
But I haven't tried giving Bossman specific attack orders, so I'll give it a try.
Any recommendations on what guns on the Rapier are most effective against Gratha? Taking in account firing speed and gun pool size.

Well, you can pick full guns and snipe, getting one round off at a time, or pick the laser and pound it. You can also go with the neutrons if you care to stick close to it.

Hmm. Suddenly I want to play WC1 too. Gotta go get the ole Kilrathi Saga out...

Although it is claimed that it is a pure myth, the trick with not auto-piloting worked for me. Order Bossman to break and attack, if possible taunt one Gratha away and attack the last. Always attack the Gratha, that seems to be doing the most damage to the Ralari. It's a hard mission but possible.

Want my advice? Fail the mission, and you'll get to play an additional 3 missions, with the best wingman there can be what's more... (if you succeed the Ralari mission, you go straight to Venice system... if you fail, you go to Rostov and get to fly with Iceman, and completing Rostov will bring then you to Venice)

It's worth it... :)

Of course, if you absolutely want to accomplish every mission, then not autopiloting is a condition sine qua non... and for that, the guys that posted before me gave some good advice...
Good luck!

I also noticed that on different times they will be either aggressive towards you or the escort. Taunt using options 1 or 3, launch missles, and keep trying the mission over again until they are coming after you. Hard mission, and one I don't like replaying!

Agreed, I'm happy with knowing I've won the mission at least once before. A silver star isn't that great if you've already got half a dozen! :) Plus the Rostov missions yield extra kills for the chalkboard. Heh, heh, the idea of a chalkboard in the 27th century still tickles me. :)

OMG guys, you playing the KS version?? Still trying to get this DOS version working on my 750MHz machine... hahahahahhaa!!

if only I had a gameport on my 100MHz laptop...

with all the failed attempts a tune gets into mind... "they're coming to take me away, hehee, hohoo, hahaa, to the funnyfarm, where life is happy all day long..."

You should only have trouble with WC1 and SM1 with regards to speed. And 100MHz would still be way too fast for them. ;)
