Sorry but ever since i played Wc i always felt that there were quite some similarities to other science fiction worlds.

1)The Starfighter thing just like Star wars
2)The Kilrathi a strong, warrior race which fights for honor
just like the Klingons in Star Trek!
3)Colonel Blair a young fighter ace just like Luke skywalker even the same actor!!(Mark Hamill)
These are just the most obvious similarities!
I know Chris Roberts was influenced by star wars and i don't think that this is bad.

But thats comon business look at master of orion 2.
Anyone ever noticed that the Mrrshan look like kilrathi?

1) Every space scifi universe has "starfighters".
2) There's also always one main baddie alien race. And what's with the switch between the SW to ST comparison.
3) There's always a main good guy. More often than not it's a guy and he's young.

Lot's a people have come up with aliens and races based on feline anatomy.

I always took the Kilrathi to be far more Japanese-like (specifically, the Japanese Samurai warrior class, and the militarists who dominated Japan during WW2) than Klingon. The warrior code, the deferance to the Emperor, the idea of a dishonoured warrior commiting Zu'karra (or Seppeku), their treatment of POWs ect.

mamboo

Then every science fiction universe is the same or what??
I mean lokk at the kilrathi even their ships look similar to klingon ones!
You could sit a kilrathi into a bird of prey and most people who don't know wing commander would say wohoo klingons are coming!!

WC = Star Wars ? Get outa here. The fighting in WC takes for the most part place in space. In Star Wars it takes place wherever you can imagine it.

But still, who cares if an other universe "borrowed" some ideas ? As long they bring it original, it's fine by me.

Sometimes different SF universes have things in common. As iCe said, as long as it stays original in its way it doesn't matter if some elements were copied. It matters if there are too many parallels. Here in my opinion it isn't the case. But you are right, they have much in common. It doesn't matter. The mixture makes it and the WC one is the best!:)

I agree with Steampunk, I think you take this too far. Like he and the others said the "star" before the fighter appears very often in sci-fi games to make a difference between our fighters and it sounds cool. There is very often an alien race which has superior physique compared to humans and these races are then often described as brutal or primitive. And it is normal that you, as the player, get someone new to play. There are relatively few games where you start as an old vet. BTW Mark Hamill first appeared in WC3 and there he was no no young hotshot. And you could put anyone in a Bird of Prey and as long as you only see the ship everyone will think the Klingons are attacking. But as soon as they see the Kilrathi they would realize that they are not the Klingons. ;)
But there are similarities between Klingons and Kilrathi, no denying there, as well as there are to the Mrrshan. BUt again, there are quite a few races wich resemble lions or tigers and as these are predatory animals, so you make these aliens warriors too.

What should we do? Okay I already read them. But it is very interesting to compare WC with other SF. And I think it is a 'stupid' idea to write in the rules...'just talking about WC.' Not very many people do that. It's okay for me. How could we stay up to date if we just talked about WC? One day everything will be said and there will be no theme any more which is worth talking about it! Then this chat will end. Or should we always leave the chat if we'd like to talk about anything else what even concerns SF? You can't mean this serious! Then you could delete half of the post right in here, many people would become frustrated and we won't get any new members. This can't be true.

Let me just say something before someone (Loaf) kills this thread. It´s a very normal thing to have some similarities between WC and Star Wars. Face it! Star Wars created a style of Sci-fi that is used until today by many others series (I'm talking about the first 3 episodes). I bet that even Mr. Roberts himself saw those movies a zillion times when they came out. And I bet that the Star Wars theme song catch the attention of you any of you guys. I'm I right?

Why shouldn't it? I like SW. After WC it's my second favourite SF universe. And it was copied so many times because it was successful and it still is. It's normal.

I believe this Mr Roberts is a self confessed fan of the trilogy.

For the record I'm not. :) I always admired WC from being different to Star Wars, more relatable to our society, our people. However that changed for me with the introduction of the Pilgrims. It gave WC a 'mystical' edge that I felt was better left to Star Wars (ie Pilgrim's abilities = the force)

Just my two cents worth.

No, the ability of telling your astrological sign just for looking at the stars :) .

Its the ability to read "scripts" left in otherspace by past Pilgrim travelers allowing Blair to plot a course through the jump point.

WC/SW/ST?

You say WC is close to SW? I see very few similarities... asside from the force thing... Star Wars uses like 4 or 5 classes of fighters, WC has about 20 at least for Earth alone... the weapons are increadibly different, the shield physics are different, the method of transportation is unique and the actors are down to earth.

As for WC vs ST, they did make a similarity between the Cats and the Klingons but other than that there is virtually no similarity. The humans in ST are peaceful, they don't have many internal problems (Tolwin comes to mind) everything else is way different.

I think WC is quite unique. It could be because of its war in space that it looks like it has alot of similarities but that is not an actuality.

I still think Babylon 5 universe would slaughter Star Trek, Star Wars and Wing Commander combined! hehe afterall, how do you kill a cloud full of nukes with sensor jammers?

It's allright to compare the stories and such merits of the two universe... but to *not* let this descend into a versus thread.

Each one deserves its credit, WC/ST/SW/B5/FL/FS/D3/ATF/LBG and countless others. Nothing wrong with doing a little 'what if this, what if that' thing. Out of all these games tho, I find that I replay the WC games 10 times more often than any other. Maybe its the interactivity. Maybe its the FMV's. Whatever it is, if I had a way to track which games I play most often, WC would end up on top, always.

Ok I must go on record.
1. Every Major SciFi universe has some form of fighter.
2. Blair was not YOUNG, at least not when mark hamill played him.
3. Kilrathi and Klingons, I personally see them as Cats and Dogs, quite litterally.
4. Just to let y'all know B5 couldn't beet alot of the universes even though I shouldn't say this purely for the reason of it's youth. B5 takes place in 2258-62, and all but 1 civilization are under 1000 years old (meaning they have had space travel for under 1000 years) *discounting volons and shadows* Wheras in SW Galactic civilization has existed for 20000 years with space travel existing for at least twice that long.
5. WC has items no other universe has, Jump Drives and it is more closely related with the modern day than anything besides b5.

Not that any of this matters.
