US Theatrical Release

AD

Finder of things, Doer of stuff
This thread is for information about the US release. As you probably know the Weinsteins are releasing the movie through their Third Rail arm which means at least for now it's a limited release. On January 23rd Outlander will be showing in 15 US cities as follows:

  • San Francisco, CA
  • Chicago, IL
  • Philadelphia, PA
  • Washington D.C.
  • Dallas, TX
  • Atlanta, GA
  • Boston, MA
  • Houston, TX
  • Seattle, WA
  • Miami, FL
  • San Diego, CA
  • Detroit, MI
  • Sacramento, CA
  • Orlando, FL
  • Tampa, FL

Other Cities will follow and we'll update the list when we know where and when. So Tell all your friends and even those that aren't.

We have finally been graced with the US poster... Check it out and leave your thoughts here!

Personally I like it but not as much as the international one. It definitely has a more sci-fi feel to this poster though compared to the fantasy look of the international one.

Quick Update: Unfortunately it sounds like -e ven though we know what cities it's playing in - the Weinstein Co. won't release the list of theaters untill the tuesday (four days) before the actual release date. What the hell?

its a cool poster but a glimpse of the moorwen would have been nice. by looking at it you really don't know what kind of film its gonna be?

This is probably the first time I've heard a film doing a limited release that is not being shown in New York! I wonder why, seeing that films released in such a way are looking for publicity and fan base, and all the other big cities are lucky enough to get prints.

As for the distributor not releasing the name of theaters until a few days prior - it definitely is a poor marketing move. But for those who are familiar with theaters in the listed cities, if you're really gung-ho about getting tickets ahead of time, management should have a good idea if they are (or especially if they're not) going to be showing the film. The "three days prior" I would guess refers to the Wednesday or Tuesday before, which is the cutoff date for newspapers to take showtime listings. Managers generally know, at the very least, a week in advance.

The film does look really interesting. I'm just a bit jealous of those that get to see it in their city before me.

Is there any information about specific screens for those cities on the list? I live in Boston, and can't really find anything on moviefone or other sites about which theater(s) this will be playing in, but Boston is listed as one of the cities that will be in the initial release.

Ah, I just saw the post above mine. Nvm.

Ok a few more details...

Unfortunately we won't know which theaters until tuesday. However... Dirk tells me we're guaranteed a total of 200 screens over the course of the run. It could be more if it does well enough but 200 is the minimum. So the 80 screens box office mojo mentions are probably just for those initial cities on the list.

So what does this mean? It means I can guarantee there will be more cities. Hopefully New York will be one of them. It just isn't in the initial batch.

Finally, the moment everyone has been waiting for is nearly here. And here it is - The list of theaters showing Outlander in the US this weekend (Thanks Dirk!). If none of these theaters are near enough to you, there will be more openings in the weeks to come so keep checking back.

It's also already out on DVD in some countries? It's not supposed to be out in holland for several months...

I will watch it again in a cult cinema, i know severel of these were you can just sit at a table like in a bowling hall and there are waitresses who bring snacks and beverages, it's the atmosphere where the movie belongs in. We could probably set up a local epic/fantasy band to play for an afterparty.

How much was mister Roberts actually involved, i see nods to other viking movies, but also some cinematic transgression that i

Looks like your post was cut off. I don't think it's actually *out* on DVD in other countries, but at least an R3 dvd rip and a really wierd russian one made it online (boo).

Chris Roberts is the main producer and was very involved to the point of even running one the soundstages shooting various effects elements when the shooting schedule was getting hectic near the end of the shoot. He was pretty much in the room and involved throughout the whole editing process etc etc.

Also, the film is specifically a love letter of sorts to old monster and sci-fi movies. Many scenes are references or are homages to something.

A number of wierd moments (like fast credits and not showing the splash at the very end were due to a clause in their contract with the running time that the Weinsteins wouldn't budge on.
