Updated And Raring To Go (January 12, 2009)

You probably didn't even notice, but the CIC transitioned to a new and more powerful server over the last few weeks. Kris has worked hard to make the move pretty seamless, but if you notice anything out of place, be sure to contact us via one of the normal methods or the new Site Feedback Forum. The new system should allow us to bring you even more exciting Wing Commander news and material in the future.

Keep up the great work, Kris and the rest of the staff. I know working behind the scenes is often a thankless task, so here I am offering my thanks to you. :) None of us would be here without you.

Quick update: the new machine is sliding off its rack. We'll be offline for about 15 minutes tonight starting at 4 AM central (about 4.5 hours from this post) so they can reseat it.

No worries. I've always wanted to know how to run my own server (in terms of hardware, I think I know about the software side of things), I suppose it must be quite expensive.

For those who don't live in the US, I believe US Central Time is UTC-0600.

We pay a professional company to physically maintain the hardware. The machine that holds wcnews, Crius and Solsector is leased by a hosting company and stored in a bunker under a mountain somewhere. Unlike most hosting plans, we don't share some machine and pipe with a bunch of other accounts - it's exclusively the CIC. That gives us the flexibility to drop a terabyte worth of bandwidth on something like a Queeg movie or Standoff chapter release where you'd find otherwise "unlimited" website accounts get shutdown when they reach 10 gigs in a day or something.

If you have to ask...

... you'll also have to live with the possibility of not getting the answer. :p
