Unknown Fighter

Seventh Part of the Seal
There is a specific model of Fighter that I have not seen in the normal wing commander universe.

It made appearances in both Super Wing Commander (3DO) and in Unknown Enemy, and in both cases, it was classified as a Rapier. I know that Super Wing Commander fighters are mostly reuses of older ships used in games like Privateer, but i cant find this one anywhere, not even on the CIC Ship Database... what is it?

I still don't really understand the thread.

Super Wing Commander is the original Wing Commander with new graphics... so it'd be the F-44A Rapier II (or possibly the YF-44A Rapier II in the Gimle System).

The three new Rapier II variants in Wing Commander Arena use a similar design.

My apologies, perhaps this will help;

In Super Wing Commander, we see ships from previous games reused as the ships in the Original Wing Commander.

Example:

Original Ship / What it was in SWC

Banshee (Armada) / Scimitar

Gladius (Armada/Priv) / Raptor

Lexington (Armada) / Bengal

Talon (Privateer 1/2) / Gratha (UGH!)

Supply Depo (WC2) / Dorkir

etc.

There are some models I've never seen before (the venture slightly resembles a Broadsword... SLIGHTLY), others include the Exeter, Drayman, Fralthi, and the Sivar Dreadnought.

What I was trying to ask is this: Is the Rapier used in Super Wing Commander an original concept, or was it a reuse from another game, if so, what game, and what fighter?

If it is the case that the fighter was an original design... wouldn't it have been better to enhance the originals and put them in the game? Just in case we're still wondering which fighter I'm referring too, below is a picture of it.

Hehe, you're not thinking linear -- SWC (developed at the same time as Privateer) is the project most of those other projects took *their* models from, not vice versa.

The Rapier model is never reused.

(Also, note that the Lexington isn't actually the Bengal -- the Lexington is a fat, stubby gray carrier... the ship that shows up in Armada's FMV is SWC's longer, thinner green Bengal.)

That's not really what he's thinking of -- Privateer, Armada and SWC literally share many of the same source 3D models...

Scimitar - Banshee (Armada)
Raptor - Gladius (Privateer & Armada)
Bengal - Armada FMV Carrier
Venture - Broadsword (WC2 - Significant Changes)
Salthi - Salthi (Privateer)
Dralthi - Dralthi (Prvateer)
Gratha - Talon (Privateer)
Jalthi - Jalkehi (WC2 - Significant Changes)
Lumbari - Unused WC2 Transport
Dorkir - Kilrathi Depot (WC2)
Snakeir - Shiraak (Armada)

I think this is the complete list -- the human shuttle which shows up in the intro is also reused in Bioforge...

I meant that now you can add the Rapier to the list - and this time it is being reused as itself -
SWC Rapier
Arena Rapier Blade

They do share a "striking" resemblance - even the guns - all of them are on the wings - while on WC1&2 the laser cannons were mounted on the canards...

What I mean is that SWC, Armada and Privateer share many of the same 3DS models -- stretched and retextured on occasions, but the same actual files.

The ship in Arena is a new model based on the look of the Rapier in SWC.

Ahha!

Now I get it.

(Silly me :D)

Also:
What about the spikeri - was it used for the WC2 Sabre?

Yeah, it's a retextured Sabre fuselage... but it's not really a Spikeri, it's an early attempt at designing a new Fralthi that wasn't used in the finished game.
