Transposing a Transport (November 16, 2006)

Long Live the Confederation!
At long last, there's news from Wing Commander: Standoff[/url], the fan mod for Secret Ops. Taking a page from Wing Commander Academy, the Standoff team has turned a transport into a frigate! The rarely seen Wing Commander Armada transport design, which they've named Targu II, is now a Kilrathi frigate -- since such ships are mentioned several times in Fleet Action. Two new profiles have been added to the website, one for the new frigate and one for Trigger. The team is currently planning to release both remaining Standoff episodes in 2007.

That's really cool!

That reminds me, I don't remember anything about the Confed transport except I thought it looked pretty sharp.

These poor ships are definitely the most underrated, overlooked designs in the Wing Commander universe.

Were there statistics for them in the Armada manuals? Did they have names?

I only recall ever seeing either of them maybe five times.

No, they didn't have statistics or names in the manuals, and they were incredibly rare to encounter in the game, too - IIRC, they never even appeared in the gauntlet (or if they did, it must've been in a late mission, which most people didn't ever get to). In the strategy mode, you would only see them in space if they had a fighter escort (which they almost never did) - otherwise, you'd just get a message that you captured a transport. I don't think I saw them more than once or twice, myself. So, yeah, underrated is right.

The name we gave our frigates, BTW, comes from the only known class-name of Kilrathi frigates, in Action Stations - we figured that since WC3 (well, WCP, strictly speaking) has Fralthi II cruisers, there may have been other classes of ships that also repeated existing names, and this would be better than coming up with a new name.

They do not appear anywhere in the gauntlet... but you can generate them in missions yourself, if you want. Just built one and bring it along with your fighters, and it'll appear in combat (unless your character is there, too, in which case it takes priority).

I can't guarantee that they even have stats in-game, though -- I think they explode the minute you shoot them, and that they don't do anything else.
