Those MIDI's.

Actually, I think they still do kind of suck. They're short and they end too abruptly. I wish I could get about five minutes of each of those tracks. And I wish I could get them to sound like it did on my old 386. Great music for ambience.

I haven't listened to the mp3s... but Privateer's score was written specifically for the SC-55 - GS MIDI in Privateer is the absolute best way to listen to the game.

Agreed. Wing Commander 1 doesn't sound like it did on my old Sound Blaster 2.0.

The music sucks, eh?

You want each of them 5 minutes long? But they only have about 2 minutes worth of music. I could loop them a couple of times to make them 5 minutes long, but to what end? during gameplay, the themes loop constantly, but you'd hardly notice the fact that you're hearing the same theme over and over again since you're too busy playing, plus, most of them actually don't play for that long since the music is dynamic and changes according to what's going on. I can't honestly believe that you did the same thing (e.g. just flying, or just fighting someone) for more than 2-3 minutes or you'd probably begin to find the game quite boring.

If it's dynamic music you want, you can check out my Wing Commander 1&2 inflight mix. I took various themes and mixed them together to make one long theme (i.e. Launch theme transforms into Patrol theme which then transforms into a Dogfight theme etc.) all transitions are very fluid and are mixed very well together.
The thing is, WC1 & WC2's inflight themes were extremely short. usually not more than 30 seconds 45 tops.
Privateer's and WC3's themes were longer, more like a minute and a half and more. to mix them together would be overkill. While the WC1&2 mix is only about 6 minutes long, it consists of almost 10 different themes. In the case of Privateer or WC3 a 5 or 6 minute mix would consist of 3-4 themes at the most.

Other than that, any complaints you have on the themes should be lodged against the composers. I only recorded them.

Those MIDI's again.

Oh I agree that the tracks themselves are short. But actually, back then when I played Privateer all the time, I would actually let the music play and do other things while listening. Hence, the ambience. And I don't really think they suck, they just aren't like I remembered them sounding. At any rate I've downloaded them anyway. And I do appreciate the files being available for download. Of all the WC games I'm definately most nostalgiac about Privateer and its music.

If you want them to loop over and over, it's not that hard to do. All you need is a simple wave editor such as GoldWave, and you can copy and paste the music over and over and over and over. Just be prepared to make a lot of room on your hard disk... :P

The trick is to find the best way to play the music, and record it. Bow how can we record WC1 tunes are they were supposed to be played?

I did record some WC1 music directly from the game to a tape a long time ago, and the results were decent.

But does the music of the DOS WC1 on an 486/SB Pro sound better than on the digital one on KS?

Are you asking me? It's a matter of personal taste, whether you prefer the digitally orchestrated version - or the FM synth music you hear using a sound blaster card in the original game.
Personally I prefer the orchestrated version.

i still remember the first time I loaded the Origin CD catalogue program that used to come with their releases, and heard the Strike Commander theme playing with good sound quality... I would just leave the computer on and listen... My God I loved that game... SC got me into Wing Commander, actually...
