The role of the Barracuda

What is the role of the Barracuda in Prophecy and Secret Ops. It is called a corvette and a capital ship but i really dont see it as either. It does get targeted as orange but capital ship weapons dont target it. It only seems to have four masers as the weapons and really just seems like a slow fighter. can someone enlighten me

Corvettes are slighly heavier than bombers -- they're cheap capital ships which can be used for patrols and for attacking larger capital ships.

yes i know the role of the corvette in WC but i was wondering. what can the barracuda do to capships since it doesnt carry torps or capship missiles? SHould it be a capital ship when torpedoes cant even be used against it and it has no components

The Kilrathi corvette is the same way in WCP -- it's a 'mid-range' ship... acts like big fighter that's orange in the engine.

All the ships in WC generally have weapons that aren't simulated... like those big prongs on all the Nephilim ships are some kind of energy weapon that's just not in the game.

I think it may be worth mentioning that even way back, in WC2, the Kilrathi corvette didn't have phase shields, so even though it was a capital ship you could just take it out with your guns. That said, the Barracuda isn't much different from any other WC corvette, except for the fact that it can't pose a threat to any capital ship no matter how hard it tries. :)

IIRC, it has a bunch of missiles, but no torpedoes. Come to think of it, torpedoes wouldn't solve the Barracuda's problems either. There's no way one of those ships would get to fly straight and level for enough time to get a lock without getting wasted...

Isnt the poseidon a torpedoe? The barracuda has 4 of it.

It may be uncapable of lasting enough alone to get a lock, but a few in the middle of a larger attack force, has :p

torps

Now that i think of it i remember the Barracuda having a torpedo capability. I guess that would make it more of a capital ship but i think the definition of capital ship must be rethought after prophecy because of the need to destroy the sections of the ship and not simply launch at the hull. The advances in technology may make the original thinking of capital ships obsolote

Exactly ;).

One alone hasnt much chance, but in the middle of a large attack force, there is always the chance that a few slip by...

They arent obsolete, its just the game style that changed. The Vesuvius class carrier is the same as in WC4, just now you have to destroy the engines and bridge to take it out, but its still a capship.

The barracuda and kilrathi corvette are just that...corvettes.

Actually, the Barracuda does carry torpedoes, and used efficiently it can be rather useful - it's just a matter of attacking the right targets. A lone corvette, or even a pack of them, will always have trouble with a Midway or a Cerberus, because both of those ships were designed to handle enormous amounts of damage. However, any pilot who ignores Barracudas on a freighter escort mission is in for a very nasty surprise.

Don't underestimate those smaller ships. Remember 'First to Kilrah' ? That wasn't a large capship, it was a smaller thingy. And it did quite some damage. It took a beating too but...

Well... it was a task force of ships... a corvette, a destroyer and an escort carrier... fairly impressive compared to a single corvette. :)

Another question. If Barracuda IS a cap-ship, why can't I lock a torpedo on it? Weird, I say...
BTW, I'd rather have a squadron of heavy bombers than a squadron of corvettes.
