The Losing Path is Better

I've finally gotten both the Wing Commander Deluxe Edition CD and the Wing Commander II Deluxe Edition CD working properly on DosBox and I've been blowing away Dralthi and Jalkehi and others away to my heart's content these past couple of weeks. After beating Wing Commander I, I went to the CIC and downloaded the save game utility so I could try playing some of the losing path missions in systems like Gateway, Chengdu, Brimstone and Port Hedland.

After playing these missions, I've found that for me as an experienced Wingnut, the missions on the losing path present more of a challenge and are more enjoyable to play on the winning path. In fact, I consider the Brimstone missions with Maniac in a Scimitar to be some of the best in WC1. Anyone else have any comments on the losing path missions?

I think this is mostly intentional. They always strove to make the losing path missions as interesting, if not more interesting, than the winning path missions. Else why would anyone ever bother to play them? My favorite mission in WC1 is Hells Kitchen 4. I don't think the Claw actually abandons you (does it?) but I didn't know that the first time I played it and so the whole mission for me was a race to get back in one piece and not miss the jump.

Also in WC3 the only way you ever saw the Kilrathi dreadnoughts was via the losing path missions. Good times. When you get around to playing Standoff be sure to venture into -their- losing paths by the way, great stuff there.

I agree with you that the losing paths are typically more challenging. Personally, I always wished some of the easier missions on the winning lines would have been made a bit more challenging.

How about the Delius missions? I love flying around the asteroid base. The first time I played WC3 I ended up in Delius. I forget when I discovered it was on the losing path, but it spurred me to replay it again to try and get my first full winning path in the game.

Yeah, it's great that they made the depot for Delius. The same goes for Callisto Station in Hellespont in Prophecy or the Midway's cameo in Sirus in Secret Ops.
