Super Wing Commander on 3DO revisited

Hello SWC fans,

I just realized that there is no reference on this fantastic website for what the 3DO Flightstck (3DO CH Flighstick Pro) controls are for Super Wing Commander. These flighstick controls are slightly different than the WC3 controls, which are nicely mapped on the WC CIC website.

Some of the button sequences are a bit awkward and will take some getting used to.

HOWEVER, I'm finding that with a nicely tuned 3DO CH Flightstick pro, the control can be surprisingly good. I was amazed how good it was after spending time restoring a slightly beat and worn 3DO flightstick. I even took the potentiometers apart, deep-cleaning their pads and the wipers. I also re-aligned the wipers polished the wiper contact points. (Yes, I actually took apart the pots...😙) I will post follow up pictures to the WC reddit site showing the teardown, and then post a link here.

I know, "why bother? You can just play SM1.5, and use Destro's phenomenal WingLoader...." Or, "mkdud, you've even done an in depth analysis of SWC on the MAC, and how it is the GREATEST version of SWC when you have a properly configured MAC and properly tuned Mac flightstick.."

I'm finding that the SWC experience on 3DO is really great when you have a properly tuned up flightstick. I'm also playing this on a 3DO FZ-10 equipped with a Shiny Gem for a killer HDMI picture, and a crown ODE.

This slightly beat flightsick pro that I recently rebuilt was even a bit better than the NOS flightstick pro that I bought NIB back in 2015-2016. Even when I bought an NIB 3DO flightstick pro back in 2015 or 2016 for SWC on 3DO, the pots in the new stick were 20+ years old. Even on an NOS stick, they may act a bit wonky...more on that later...

I did try the same restored flightstick on a stock 3DO FZ1 with s-video out and a stock optical drive running my original CD rom of SWC. The experience was still great.

I still feel the Mac SWC is unsurpassed if you are running it on a proper Mac with a nice Mac flightstick. I would rate this a 9 to 9.5. I would say that the 3DO SWC with a good flightstick pro is VERY worthwhile, and would rate it as a solid 8 to 8.5.

I would definitely suggest giving 3DO SWC a revisit when you can with a tuned-up CH FS Pro.

I will post more later...-mk

Wow, this was almost 10 years ago...There are some posts previous to this where Bandit Loaf and I were discussing running SWC on a powerbook, but I never really got into the powerbook option once I built a proper G3 power mac, as well as the imac.

The above reddit link shows an updated FS Pro control map with some updated functions for SWC. I also added pictures of the potentiometer restoration and teardown, and some explanations.

So far, 2 WC fans have contacted me after they tried SWC and WC3 on 3DO, one with a FSPro they tuned up, the other recently bought a CIB in new condition. They are glad they gave it a try.

Here is the link for the potentiometer teardown:
